EUGENE, Ore.—A pair of school record holders were in action on the third night of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials as high jumper Sanaä Barnes (Keller, Texas) and steeplechaser Lydia Olivere (Wilmington, Del.) competed in their respective events at Hayward Field on Sunday evening. Barnes tied for an 11th place overall finish in the final of the high jump and Olivere came in 13th in her first round heat of the 3000 meter steeplechase. Both athletes made their Olympic Trials debut while closing out record-setting outdoor seasons on the national stage.

Barnes had advanced to the final of the high jump from the qualifying round on Friday afternoon and she cleared the bar at a height of 1.77 meters in competition on Sunday evening. She had extended her own school record and set a new lifetime best on Friday when she jumped 1.87 meters and tied for 10th place out of 25 athletes in the qualifying round. Barnes is a four-time All-American in the high jump, including twice each during the collegiate indoor and outdoor seasons.

The bar started at a height of 1.77 meters in the final just as it had during qualifying two days earlier. Barnes jumped fourth in the order of the 12 competitors in the final and made it comfortably over the bar on her first jump of the day. The next progression was a height of 1.82 meters, at which Barnes and one other athlete were eliminated with three missed attempts. Barnes was one of five collegians who qualified for the final on Sunday evening.

This season was a clear step forward for Barnes, who now owns 14 of the top 17 marks in school history in the high jump. She tied for a 10th place finish at the NCAA Championships indoors, improved to a sixth place finish at the national meet during the outdoor season and came into the Olympic Trials with a season best mark of 1.82 meters. Barnes improved her previous lifetime best by two centimeters and broke her own former school record by three centimeters on the first night of the Trials when she cleared 1.87 meters to secure a spot in the final.

Olivere ran in the second of two heats in the steeplechase later Sunday night and posted a time of 10:03.13 to finish 13th in her heat and 28th overall out of 33 competitors in all. The top five finishers in each heat and the next four fastest times moved on to the final later in the week. The time of 10:03.13 for Olivere is her third-fastest this season. She now owns the top four fastest times in school history in the steeplechase, all of which have been recorded over the past two months.

It has been a sensational spring of competition for Olivere, who returned to action in top form after the lengthy disruption to collegiate competition due to the COVID pandemic. After qualifying as an individual for the NCAA Championships in cross country in March, she lowered the Villanova record in the 3000 meter steeplechase on three separate occasions during the outdoor track & field season. Her current record and personal best time of 9:49.88 was set just eight days before her race at the Olympic Trials, as she earned her spot with a second place finish at the USATF NJ NY Open and Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships in New York last weekend.

Villanova has a strong contingent of athletes at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials this week. Still to come on the Wildcats schedule in Eugene is the women's 800 meters which features current student-athlete McKenna Keegan (West Grove, Pa.) along with Villanova alum Angel Piccirillo. The first round of the 800 meters takes place on Thursday night at 10 p.m. Eastern time (7 p.m. Eastern time) and can be seen live on NBCSN. The top 16 performers from Thursday night will advance to the semifinal round on Friday, and eight semifinalists will advance to the final on Sunday, June 27.
