BOSTON — The Yankees have been engaged with many teams as general manager Brian Cashman looks for ways to improve the club before the July 30 trade deadline.
But don’t expect anything to happen any time soon.
“We’ve had a lot of conversations but I wouldn’t say there’s any momentum,” Cashman told reporters before Saturday’s game vs. the Red Sox at Fenway Park. “I didn’t get a sense there’s a feeling of action right now from the industry. Doesn’t mean that people can’t make a deal and won’t make a deal but it doesn’t feel like there’s a lot of heavy activity ready to burst.”

Cashman said that he was speaking to Boston general manager Chaim Bloom earlier in the day and that they were both wondering the same thing: “When will that dam break?” Cashman said.
Typically, teams ramp up trade talks following the MLB Draft, which used to take place in early June. This season, it was pushed to July 11-July 13.
“The closer you get to the draft, the less likely people will be engaged during that time frame because you’re focused on nailing the draft,” the GM said. “So, I don’t know. Clearly, with areas that we want to try to improve upon, we’re open to a lot of ideas. We’re ready whenever. That doesn’t mean that the market is ready to move yet either. We’ll just stay engaged, see if we can push the envelope a little bit, but it plays out the way it plays out”
He added that he’s “just making phone calls, sending texts and seeing if we can run into something.” The Yankees entered Saturday in third place in the American League East.
Earlier in June, Cashman said the Yankees would explore upgrades at center field. They also likely could use starting rotation depth, with the health of Luis Severino (groin/Tommy John surgery), Corey Kluber (shoulder) and Clarke Schmidt (forearm) up in the air.
