Runners try to take it easy, still qualify in San Diego Section track prelims - The San Diego Union-Tribune

There are two schools of thought for competitors in the section divisional prelims.

One is just to qualify for the finals, making as little effort as possible. The other is to let it all loose in the hopes of a section or school record.

A third possibly never spoken but always understood is that the prelims have the potential to lose athletes to injury — which Cathedral Catholic’s Bryce Brock discovered when he suffered a pulled hamstring eliminating him from further competition.

Athletes like Scripps Ranch’s Aaliyah McCormick, who ran carefully and easily qualified at 14.39 and 43.87 in the two hurdle events— well off the 14.10 and 43.12 she ran a week ago — was indicative of the running just to advance at the Division II prelims Saturday at Mt. Carmel.

The latter was represented by West Hills’ Brandy Atuatasi, who led qualifying in both the shot and discus. Competing with an injured wrist, she was far from pleased.

“That’s the goal,” said Atuatasi when asked about the San Diego Section discus standard of 167-3 set by Mt. Miguel’s Laulauga Tausaga.

“My wrist doesn’t bother me at all in that event. It really hurt today in the shot because I wasn’t able to see my chiropractor this week with all the senior activities.”

Her best in the discus is 162-3 and Saturday she hit 156-9 on her second throw. In just her third shot competition of the season, she reached 40-9½.

“I’m going for that (discus) record next week,” said the Stanford-bound senior.

The DII prelims saw one major disappointment and other athlete that appears to be rounding into shape at just the right time.

University City’s Katriina Wright, the 2019 state champion in the 400, withdrew from the metric quarter-mile after continuing to have negative reactions to her second Covid-19 shot.

But another 2019 standout, Jaymie Rustkovich, led all qualifiers in the 100 at 12.32 and easily won her heat in the 200 at 25.11. She now competes for Mt. Carmel after being a member of the Scripps Ranch state champion 4x100 relay team.

“It has been a very challenging year with the coronavirus and switching teams,” said Rustkovich, a senior. “I’m trying to get back under 12 seconds in the 100 and stay mentally strong.”

On the boys’ side, Brock, one of the state’s top sprinters, appeared to ease up five meters from the finish en route to winning his 100 heat in 10.95.

It turns out he was not just cruising.

“I’m done,” declared Brock after exiting the medical tent where he had ice applied to his right hamstring. “If I try to run (the 200), you won’t see me for five years.

“I’m a firm believer everything happens for a reason. It’s all part of God’s plan — I’m not discouraged — things happen. I’ll be back stronger next year.”

Brock’s best of 10.56 in the 100 was third in the state among non-windy times and his 21.49 was equal to the third fastest in legal conditions.

That came after the Dons, with the best time in the section in the 400-meter relay, botched the baton pass between the first and second runners, eliminating them from the finals.

DIVISION I

Helix’s Adren Parker inched ever-closer to dipping under 48 seconds when he improved his section-best 400-meter time to 48.05 at Del Norte. Parker’s previous best was 48.12.

Mission Hills’ Kyle Smith was the top qualifier in the 100 at 10.80 and the 200 in a wind-aided 21.76 as well as leading the 4x100 relay team to the fastest time in the section this year at 42.11.

San Marcos’ Levi Taylor lowered his section-best in the 1600 to 4:16.47 and the Carlsbad 4x400 relay team posted a 2021 best of 3:25.09.

For the girls, Poway’s Alyssa Bean posted the fastest 200 (24.47), 400 (56.56) and was part of the Titans’ 3:55.76 in the 4x400 relay.

DIVISION III

Madison’s Aysha Shaheed was unbeatable in both the 100 at 11.94 and the 200 at 24.49 as well as leading the Warhawks’ 4x100 relay team to victory in 48.87 to top performances at Valley Center High.

On the boys’ front, junior Bryce Gilmore of Sage Creek sped to a 4:19.90 in the 1600 while Lincoln’s Jahlil Florence broke 11 in the 100 with a wind-legal 10.77.
