MADISON, Wis. – Last week’s stretch of freezing temperatures mean 2021 can officially open with weekends of ice fishing in South Central Wisconsin.
In Madison, Monona Bay was packed with fishermen Saturday afternoon.
“It’s the early ice,” said Pete Hupf. “The fish really stack in here because it freezes first.”
Hupf and a group took to Monona Bay Saturday, trying their luck at Blue Gills and Crappies.
“There’s warm water underneath this ice,” Hupf said. “The fish just flood in here, so all three of these triangles really are productive.”
Hupf is a guide for Best Dam Bait and Guiding out of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. On Saturday, he was leading a group including Olivia Delozier and her Father Metcalf Crump, who was visiting from Memphis.
“We don’t have this kind of ice down in Memphis,” Crump said. “We got some good panfish to make some fish tacos tonight.”
Hupf said he loves to see newcomers like Delozier and Crump practice the sport.
“It’s a good way to get out of the house,” he said. “Especially the way the last year has been. For someone who’s never done this, there’s a lot of tools to make it warm, comfortable and fun.”
The start of the ice fishing season also means more business for D and S Bait and Tackle in Madison.
“There’s not a lot of outdoor activities in the wintertime that most people can participate in,” said Gene Dellinger, who’s owned the shop for 30 years. “Fishing is one.”
Dellinger said during the summer months, he saw an influx of new customers to his store, some of which were fishing for the first time.
“It’s just a desire to try something different,” he said. “They’ve got maybe a little more time on their hands and they maybe want to do something in the outdoors. Fishing is pretty easy to get started in, doesn’t require a whole lot of equipment and it doesn’t require a whole lot of knowledge to get started.”
“We’re ready to do it again,” Crump said.
