Brian Williams had Twitter at hello with this ‘wrong clip’ of the Trump-McCarthy meeting - MarketWatch

You had us at “exclusive video,” Brian Williams.

“The 11th Hour” anchor launched into a segment on former President Donald Trump meeting with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy at Trump’s Palm Beach, Fla., club-cum-residence Mar-a-Lago on Thursday by teasing, “We are all about to see something for the first time. We have what I’m told is the first video ... exclusive video out of this meeting today between McCarthy and Trump. We’ll watch it and react on the other side.”

But rather than rolling footage of Trump and the California Republican discussing how the GOP can claim control of the House of Representatives in 2022 — the purported subject of the meeting — Williams’s MSNBC show cut to the romantic climax of the 1996 film “Jerry Maguire,” when Tom Cruise’s character says, “You complete me,” and Renee Zelleweger’s character responds, “You had me at hello.”

Watch it here:

Williams brushed it off with a straight face as “the wrong clip.”

“We were sold a bill of goods here — I thought this was going to be of the McCarthy and Trump meeting,” he said, “and someone is going to be, of course, in big trouble.”

His on-air guests, conservative pundit Bill Kristol and comedian Baratunde Thurston, both shook their heads and smiled in response.

And Williams’s barbs didn’t stop there. The anchor later asked Thurston if McCarthy had visited the former president to “kiss the ring” while visiting what he sarcastically called Trump’s “underdecorated Florida home.” Thurston replied that he was still “recovering from the clip,” adding: “Thank you, and I’m mad at you right now for making me break so much.”

Indeed, Thurston released a statement on Friday saying he “had no involvement with or advanced knowledge of this clip selection,” and that he is “as shocked as Brian’s viewers are at the pitch perfect, understated, savage satire of Brian and his team.”

He added, “I’m a bit jealous it was not my idea.”

Most viewers interpreted the occurrence as a bone-dry joke and epic trolling of Trump and McCarthy, which led “Brian Williams” to trend on Twitter well into Friday as the clip went viral, with actors including Leslie Jones, Josh Gad and Billy Baldwin sharing it. Comedian Jones called the veteran news anchor “Brian Pettiness.”

MSNBC was not immediately available for comment as to whether the “Jerry Maguire” clip had indeed been cued up with intent, nor whether anyone would be disciplined over it.
