Mat and Savanna Shaw have released their first music video of 2021.
The Shaws, who went viral for their cover of “The Prayer” at the start of the pandemic, released a performance of the Colbie Caillat song “Try” on Sunday. The song is featured on their debut album that came out a few months ago.
In a Facebook post, Mat Shaw said performing the song about body image as a father-daughter duo added “a really meaningful twist.”
“This song is a powerful discussion about identity and the effect that we let others’ perceptions have on us,” he wrote. “I want my daughters to know that they never need to change themselves to belong. Find your people. Love yourself. I will love you forever.”
In 2018, Caillat visited Brigham Young University during homecoming week and talked about the inspiration behind her song “Try,” among other subjects, in a Q&A session with students.
“Forever, women have been expected to be a certain way, look a certain way. I know for me … I was never the girly-girl,” Caillat said at BYU, according to the Deseret News. “When I first started touring, I didn’t even wear makeup — I wore jeans. … And then I started being told I needed to look differently because I was going to be on TV. … All of that starts getting put in your head and if you don’t have a strong enough sense of what you believe or who you are, you can easily get worried by it — I was for a certain amount of time.
“For me, it took a long time to realize that I don’t need to alter myself … and I wanted to write ‘Try’ to remind myself and anyone listening that we don’t have to be someone else,” the songwriter continued. “(That message) is for men and for women. I wrote ‘Try’ because I had that realization, and it took me too long to have that realization.”
As of Monday evening, the Shaws’ cover of “Try” has more than 65,000 views on YouTube.
In November 2020, the Shaws, who live in Kaysville, Utah, spoke to the Deseret News about their unexpected rise to fame amid the pandemic. In less than a year, they’ve gained millions of of views and climbed the charts on iTunes.
“We’ll just kind of see where it goes,” Mat Shaw said at the time. “But we feel the responsibility of using this platform to share hope and spread joy. That’s meaningful and fulfilling and rewarding work to be involved in.
“If we lost all our fans tomorrow we’d still sing, because we love it,” he added. “We’d love it just the same.”
