Think this morning’s shivering temperatures are bad for May?

If you lived in 1923, you would have been digging out from up to a foot of snow in parts of Michigan.

Weather history shows May 9 as a record-breaking day, with the heaviest snow falling in the Flint and Lansing areas way back in 1923.

A National Weather Service synopsis of the event says it’s something that has never been equaled for season lateness and magnitude.

In that year, a strong cold front sent temperatures plummeting from 62 at 1 p.m. to 34 at 6 p.m. on May 8. The next day, heavy, wet snow fell in abundance.

Temperatures remained steady at around freezing with a stiff wind of 15-25 mph.

Detroit ended up getting 6 inches of snow, 6 to 9 inches fell in the Ann Arbor area and up to a foot of snow dropped in the Flint area and north of Lansing into the Saginaw Valley.

The normal average high for May 9 in Southeast Michigan is 67.

The 1923 snow actually helped insulate tender vegetation from possible cold damage. By the next morning, May 10, much of the snow already had melted.

Weather Service staff had this quip to share:

“So, the next time you think it’s too cold for this late in spring or we can’t possibly have a measurable snowfall in May across Southeast Lower Michigan, you might want to THINK about it again (or maybe not),” they wrote.
