MUSKEGON, MI - In the two months since efforts against COVID-19 began ramping up across the state, some restaurants have stayed open for business. But many others temporarily closed due to the uncertainty.
Now, as people and businesses begin to adjust to this difficult “new normal,” many temporarily closed eateries are reopening for takeout and delivery, such as the classic barbecue joint, U.S. 31 Bar-B-Q, which is one of five Muskegon-area restaurants worth trying out this week.
There’s something for everyone in the list below, including pizza, sandwiches, Chinese food, and sweet treats for dessert (or breakfast; we won’t tell).
Topshelf (2155 E. Apple Ave. & 500 Western Ave.)
For classic pub grub - including fried apps and wings - Topshelf can fulfill orders from its two Muskegon locations. It’s especially known for its pizza and subs, and also offers loaded salads, pita sandwiches, fried shrimp and chicken tenders, in quantities that can satisfy the whole family, or just one hungry patron.
The downtown liquor bar also is selling growlers to go, with a wide variety of beers on tap, including local and domestic craft brews, ales, ciders, whites and stouts.
See the menu here, and call 231-773-4444 to arrange delivery or pickup from the Apple Ave. location, or call 231-722-6206 for pickup only at the downtown location on Western Avenue.
Wolfie’s Pizza and Subs (420 S. Wolf Lake Road)
Another option for pizza and sandwiches is Wolfie’s, which offers hearty subs, loaded up pizzas, salads and pastas. Munch on apps like mozzarella sticks, pickle chips and breaded shrimp, or enjoy dipping wings, bread sticks, steak bites or Bosco sticks into a variety of sauces.
See the menu here, and call 231-788-2600 to arrange a pickup.
U.S. 31 BBQ (151 W. Muskegon Ave.)
After weeks away, Muskegon’s classic barbecue joint, which has been around for more than 80 years - and was a finalist for Michigan’s Best Barbecue - has reopened for lunchtime takeout.
Visitors can order beef or pork sandwiches, chili, fries and cold drinks, but no dessert. The restaurant will offer walk-up service at its windows, with one designated for ordering and one for pickup, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Find the menu here, and head downtown to place your order. Be sure and maintain social distance from fellow patrons when you do!
Joe Chan’s Bistro (2675 Henry St.)
This Roosevelt Park restaurant blends Chinese dishes, like cashew chicken, seafood Szechuan, and Peking sauce pork, with steakhouse fare, including its signature Hong Kong Steak specialty. You can also load up on pan-Asian starters, including spicy wings, pot stickers, egg rolls, and Vietnamese spring roll, or mix a soup and salad for something lighter.
Takeout is available every day except Monday, from 4-8 p.m. By texting “JOE CHANS” to 31996, you can receive a coupon for 10 percent off. Find the menu here, and call 231-747-9021 to arrange a pickup.
The Dive (620 E. Colby St.)
This old-school bakery in Whitehall continues to offer breakfast, lunch and fresh baked goods for pickup. For breakfast, you can grab omelets, stuffed hash browns, and pancakes, and the lunchtime menu offers soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers and chicken tenders.
You can also pick up fresh bread to make your own sandwiches, or sweet pastries, like cinnamon rolls and blueberry turnovers, as a special treat.
Check their Facebook page for menu pages and to see the daily special, and call 231-894-2999 to arrange a pickup.

PREVENTION TIPS
In addition to washing hands regularly and not touching your face, officials recommend practicing social distancing, assuming anyone may be carrying the virus.
Health officials say you should be staying at least 6 feet away from others and working from home, if possible.
Use disinfecting wipes or disinfecting spray cleaners on frequently-touched surfaces in your home (door handles, faucets, countertops) and carry hand sanitizer with you when you go into places like stores.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has also issued an executive order requiring people to wear face coverings over their mouth and nose while inside enclosed, public spaces.
