ALBANY - More than 600 videos were entered into a New York ad campaign to encourage people to wear masks in public.
The winner was announced Tuesday: "We Heart New York" created by Bunny Lake Films, a production studio in Brooklyn.
"For New York to reopen and stay open, we all need to do our part," the 30-second ad showing people wearing masks in the streets of New York City said.
Second place went to "You Can Still Smile" by Natalia Bougadellis and Emory Parker, both New York City filmmakers.
"I wear a mask for my fellow New Yorkers," the ad starts, showing a series of people wearing masks and talking about why they do so.
The contest was started May 5 and overseen by Gov. Andrew Cuomo's daughter, Mariah Kennedy Cuomo.
The goal was to encourage New Yorkers to create videos explaining why everyone should wear a mask in public, the governor and his daughter said.
There were more than 600 submissions and 186,000 votes cast, Cuomo's office said
"Thank you to everyone who submitted ads, who voted, who shared ads, and helped spread this important message that it's absolutely critical to wear a mask in public," Mariah, one of the governor's three daughters, said during the governor's daily coronavirus briefing Tuesday.
"We'll be continuing to reach out to New Yorkers for help in spreading the message about how we can get through this together because New Yorkers are clearly ready and willing and able to help."
The governor has preached daily the importance of wearing masks in public. New York has had more than 23,000 deaths due to COVID-19, by far the most in the nation.
Cuomo joked he asked his daughter to help "volunteer, pro bono, no money. Supervised by her very nice, easy going boss: moi."
He said there was only a 500-vote margin between the first and second place choices, so he choose to run them both.
New York spends about $50 million a year on its ad campaigns, and the state health department also runs its own set of annual public service announcements.
The response to the "Wear a Mask" campaign demonstrates just "how engaged people are all through this," Cuomo said.
"This is about life and death. This is about their lives, this is about their community, and they're engaged, and they should be, because they are New York tough, smart, united, disciplined and loving."
