The State Liquor Authority has temporarily suspended liquor licenses for three Queens restaurants and bars — the Brik and M.I.A. in Astoria, and Maspeth Pizza in Maspeth — following a weekend of raucous outdoor partying in front of the establishments despite COVID-19 crowd restrictions, AMNY reports.
All three businesses have had their liquor licenses suspended starting on July 21 for an indefinite amount of time, according to the report. NYC had already revoked the Brik’s street seating permit for a week after the bar failed to enforce social-distancing measures over the weekend.
A fourth business, the Secrets Gentlemen’s Club in Deer Park on Long Island, also had its liquor license temporarily suspended this week for social-distancing violations.
NYC council member Costa Constantinides, who represents Astoria, is additionally calling for the SLA to suspend another restaurant’s liquor license: Melody Cafe and Restaurant, a hookah bar and lounge in the neighborhood. Constantinides says that “the location has become problematic to neighbors in terms of noise and large crowds that flout social distancing rules,” according to an LIC Post report.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has repeatedly warned of crackdowns on NYC bars and restaurants that aren’t enforcing the state’s social-distancing regulations. White Horse Tavern in the West Village was the first NYC bar to temporarily lose its liquor license after the SLA reported over 30 social-distancing violations at the spot, including selling alcohol without food and setting up outdoor patio seating before it was legally allowed.
On Monday, Cuomo warned again in a press conference that the state may roll back NYC’s reopening plan due to people gathering in large crowds outside of restaurants and bars in the city.
