Culinary road trip: Here are 10 restaurants to try in and around Vero Beach - Florida Today

For years, when local residents have needed a change of culinary scenery, or simply were curious about the things around Brevard, they have headed south and have discovered there’s a lot to be said for restaurants no farther away than Vero Beach.

The Treasure Coast does have its culinary treasures, and in the eyes of professional reviewers as well as neighbors, here are 10 of the best:

American Icon Brewery, 1133 19th Place, Vero Beach: Another step in the redevelopment of Vero Beach’s historic downtown district, American Icon boasts a variety of burgers, “Pubwiches,” entrees, pizzas and salads as well as seasonal and special-release beers. Call 772-934-4266 or visit americaniconbrewery.com.

Citrus Grillhouse, 1050 Easter Lily Lane, Vero Beach: Chef Scott Varricchio runs an American bistro in quarters that reflect old-fashioned, waterfront grandeur, and it has become quite popular with Brevardians, especially for patio dining. They go for food such as Summer Gazpacho, Primavera Risotto and a 12-ounce Wagyu strip steak. Call 772-234-4114 or visit citrusgrillhouse.com.

Cobalt, Kimpton Vero Beach Hotel & Spa, 3500 Ocean Drive, Vero Beach: Go for the Oysters Champagne Mignonette, the steak tartar or the seafood risotto. Stay for the steak of your choice or Chicken Tagine and know that, like other restaurants in the area, Cobalt’s menu is seasonal, local and organic. Its emphasis is on the sustainable and environmentally conscious. Call 772-469-1060 or visit cobaltrestaurant.com.

DiMare, 1517 Ocean Drive, Vero Beach: A little French, a little Italian, a lot romantic, higher-end DiMare specializes in the likes of Bouchee of Brie, Dover Sole Almandine and Veal Chop Forestierre. The Kilted Mermaid, 1937 Old Dixie Highway, Vero Beach: The restaurant describes itself as a “funky beer and wine bar,” but the colorful Kilted Mermaid also wins plaudits for its food, like mahi with a ginger carrot reduction, a variety of fondues for dinner or dessert, Fisherman’s Pie and a Kilted Steak Sandwich in which the steak is tenderloin. Marsh Landing, 44 N. Broadway St., Fellsmere: You want a taste of Old Florida?
