Area highway crews try to get ahead of possible wintry precipitation - KWTX

WACO, Texas (KWTX) Texas Department of Transportation crews were pre-treating bridges and overpasses Tuesday just in case a winter storm moving into the region produces some wintry precipitation.

TxDOT spokesman Ken Roberts said crews are spraying roadways with brine, a saltwater solution that should help prevent icy patches if a wintry mix should fall Wednesday.

The primary focus is bridges and overpasses.

“Bridge locations have wind will blow under and over the overpasses and causes temperatures to drop very quickly,” says Roberts.

Temple’s Public Works Department has two sand spreaders ready for operation if needed and crews planned to inspect bridges and overpasses as the storm system moves through.

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department will be sanding the entrances to such public facilities as City Hall, Municipal Court, Summit Recreation Center and Sammons Community Center.

The greatest potential for a mix of rain, sleet and snow is in an area near and west of Highway 281 including western Lampasas, western Coryell, Hamilton, Mills and San Saba counties.

In areas closer to the Interstate 35 corridor including Bell, Coryell, Hill and McLennan counties, rain is more likely than sleet or snow.

The best chance for precipitation is from around 5 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesday.

West of Highway 281 some minor accumulations of sleet or ice are possible, primarily on bridges and overpasses.
