50 youngster try hockey for free - KEYT

Sports

GOLETA, Calif. -- 50 kids, ranging from 3 to 10 years old, tried hockey for free at the Ice in Paradise in Goleta.

Saturday was Try Hockey For Free Day in America. More than 350 youth hockey organizations across the country participated in the event to introduce kids to the sport.

Saturday morning, the Ice in Paradise gave first-timers a helmet, gloves, stick, pants and a jersey. They learned balance, how to skate, how to get up when they fall and how to have fun.

Mike Cox drove down with his son Joshua from San Luis Obispo. He said, “And it’s good that they have, especially ice hockey, because it takes a lot of money to actually get them in the sport. You know just starting up. Giving him an opportunity to get him dressed out and see how it is. You know gets him into new things and you never know what they might like.”

If you would like to have your kid try hockey, the Ice in Paradise has a 6-week introductory league called The Little Norqs. You can sign up on their website here.
