Sunday February 9 is National Pizza Day and it's the perfect day to celebrate with a slice of great pizza. In honor of this special day, we've worked together with our MLive readers to compile a list of fantastic new pizza spots across the state. We asked you to share your new favorites, places that have opened since our last search in 2016.
We absolutely love pizza here at Michigan's Best, and have gone on the hunt for the very best pizza twice, once in 2013 and again in 2016. During our searches, we focused on locally owned, independent restaurants. High quality ingredients were the first thing we looked for, with a great crust that was true to the style, and a flavorful sauce.
There are a lot of different styles here in Michigan, and we decided to not compare apples to oranges. From thin crust, Chicago style square cut in the Upper Peninsula, to heavy toppings on the western lakeshore, to deep dish square in Detroit, we've got a lot to choose from. We picked the pizzas who's memories stayed with us over our journey, the ones that we continued to eat in the car on the way to the next stop, and the ones that still make our mouths water in remembrance.

We know how quickly the restaurant business can change, and how often new spots open. Our readers know their own communities best, so we asked you to share your expertise with us, and let us know where the best new pizzerias are in Michigan.
These are spots that have opened in the last few years, and have already made an impact on their communities, serving up slice after slice of awesome pizza.

"DHOP is located inside City Market in Downtown Bay City. They offer whole pies or pizza by the slice. They have some delicious pizza! They opened in 2019.
A few of my favorites- breakfast pizza, pesto artichoke mushroom, and chicken bacon ranch. They have delicious pizza pinwheels- think of a cloud of pizza full of chewy mozzarella cheese and pepperoni.
DHOP has a crust that will have you going back- it is on the thinner side with a great crunch, but there is still some chewiness."

“The ambiance is excellent. The staff is the friendliest around. The pizza is the absolute best! Their blend of cheeses leaves you wanting more even though you’re stuffed! My favorite pizza happens to be ham and pepperoni. It’s a struggle between that and the Zoodles every time I go."

"You should definitely try the new pizzeria in Mt. Pleasant called Vin Trofeo’s. They have hand crafted pizzas with fresh ingredients. Even their sauce is homemade! They also have a large selection of keto, gluten free & vegan options. A cauliflower crust pizza, grinders, breadsticks & cinnisticks! There is so much flavor in every bite! I recommend the margarita pizza. My 11 year old loves the club grinders & my 7 year old loves the cheeseburger pizza. I also love their zoodles. I vote them for best pizza!"

"They opened a few months ago after moving their established business from Edmore, Michigan. They are doing so well. Adding new taps regularly including local draft root beer. Yes, root beer on TAP! Run by two really cool guys, Tim & Will….Fun types of pizza, wings, cocktails, Sunday Funday Bar with Bloody Mary’s & Mimosa’s…BUT…….the thing that gets me is somehow, this pizza “melts in your mouth”…LITERALLY…..the sauce is brightly colored and very light in texture with flavor like they JUST made it. They have a 4-cheese combination which is great but somehow the crust……the crust is chewy….. but crunchy…..but also so light and airy? I’m not sure how they do that. I can’t describe it and I wish I could, but I know others agree the pizza is very “melty”…..Best Pizza I have ever had. And the pepperoni….another story! I rarely eat carbs, but I could not stop eating it!"

"We love Bella Bolla Pizzeria in Port Huron Michigan. it is a brick oven pizzeria serving up traditional pizzas as well as more modern twists. It has a gluten free and vegan menu and every pizza is totally customizable. It opened in the fall of last year and definitely should be on your list!"

The Curious Pig in Crystal Falls, Michigan has the best pizza. I would say everyone's favorite is The Barnyard pizza. It has brisket, pork, chicken, and bacon with smoked cheeses on it with (owners) Scion and Pam's special sauce . It is out of this world. They specialize in a thin crispy crust. They also have non-gluten and cauliflower crusts available. They must have 8 to 10 different kinds of pizza. You can even build your own pizza. Definitely wonderfully awesome pizza, friendly service and a great atmosphere for the whole family.

Mootz Pizzeria + Bar, located at 1230 Library St, is Detroit’s only authentic New York Pizzeria. The menu was created by six time World Pizza Games champion Bruno DoFabio and features a thinner crust alternative to the Detroit style seemingly everywhere else around town.
