REMUS – A major bright spot for the young Chippewa Hills boys soccer team this season has been the play of goalkeeper Zach Clark.
The Warriors play at Big Rapids on Wednesday in district action. It’s Clark’s senior season and he returned to high school action after COVID basically forced the cancellation of the 2020 campaign for the Warriors. He had played some AYSO soccer prior to high school.
“I’m just glad to be back and to be playing,” he said. “I’ve been a goalie since I started.”
Clark said it was his idea to be a keeper and hasn’t regretted his decision.
“I’m good at it,” he said. “I like stopping the goals from going in. Reaction time is the key. You have to cut down the angle and know where they’re going to shoot it from.”
Clark has occasionally been a striker and said he’s confident in his kicking abilities. But he’s preferred being a keeper. He’s had a young defense in front of him and has face many shots on the net.
Soccer is Clark’s only sport.
“We’re having fun, that’s been the main goal,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if we win or lose.”
The Warriors ended the regular season with an 8-1 loss on Monday against Hart. Chippewa Hills is 0-13 overall and 0-8 in the CSAA Bronze.
“We had strong play by Lewis Young, Jonnah Fiegel, Justin Sorsen, and Ashton Clark,” Warrior coach Jay Franks said. “Zach Clark kept us in the game. Our goal was scored by Scotty Miller.”
