New York Jets running back Ty Johnson wasn’t surprised by Mike White’s game-winning heroics in Sunday’s 34-31 come-from-behind upset against the Bengals. He’d been singing the backup’s praises since the beginning.
“Mike White is a stud,” Johnson said when speaking to reporters Monday after the announcement of Zach Wilson’s two-to-four-week recovery prognosis.
He made sure to reiterate his support in Sunday’s postgame press conference.
“It’s Mike F’ing White. I said it on Monday, I’ll say it again and I’ll keep saying it: He’s a dog. He’s an animal. He’s a savage,” Johnson, who had five catches for 71 yards, said.
In his first NFL start, White became the first Jets quarterback this season to pass for more than 300 yards. He went 37-of-45 for 405 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. He finished the first half going 23-of-29 for 217 yards and went 7-of-7 for 65 yards on the Jets’ opening drive to set up a Michael Carter rushing touchdown. It was the first time all season the Jets scored points in the first quarter.
When asked if he expected White to have such a monster performance, an “I-told-you-so” grin spread across his face.
“Of course. Why not? Why wouldn’t I? I expect the best of him and he brought his best. I knew he was going to have a game. I was excited for him,” Johnson said. “He was on his p’s and q’s, he was on his protection and he was slinging that thing. I told him before the game: ‘You’re a gunslinger, man. Let’s ride. I got you.’”
It was the support of his teammates and coaches throughout the week that helped White stay grounded heading into the Halloween showdown against a high-caliber Bengals team.
“Anytime you get to play football it’s fun. That’s what we all grew up doing and that’s what we all came to this level to do, so I embrace it, but I think I personally did a good job of not making it more than it is,” White said. “What helped a lot too, was the coaches’ faith in me and the team’s faith in me. There wasn’t a flinch and guys were supportive, guys were rallying around me and it made it that much easier.”
Jets running back Michael Carter, who had 95 yards receiving on nine catches and rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown, also had high expectations for White.
“He went crazy. I see that every day from him, so I’m not surprised at what he just did. Y’all are, but I’m not at all,” Carter said. “I think he played a really good game. ... He deserves it because he works so hard every day. I got a lot of love for Mike White.”
And as for the “Mike White” chants that circulated throughout MetLife Stadium in the final minutes of the fourth quarter?
“He deserves that. You saw what he did today,” Carter said. “He threw the ball 45 times for like 400 yards? They should be chanting Mike White’s name. He deserves that, he earned that because he works hard every day.”
