Prince Harry smelled of alcohol and cigarettes during a meeting with Katie Couric, years before his relationship with Meghan Markle, the former Today host has claimed.
The Duke of Sussex was interviewed by Katie Couric in 2012 in Brazil for an ABC show about Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee.
Couric, who works alongside Harry at the Aspen Commission on Information Disorder, said it was during his "wild-oats sowing phase" in her biography Going There.
Quoted by The Daily Mail, the CBS host wrote that cigarettes and alcohol seemed to "ooze from every pore."
Harry told his Apple TV docuseries The Me You Can't See how he experienced four years of chaos from aged 28 to 32.
Prince Harry said: "I was willing to drink, I was willing to take drugs. I was willing to do the things that made me feel less like I was feeling.
"But I slowly became aware that, OK, I wasn't drinking Monday to Friday but I would probably drink a week's worth in one day on a Friday or a Saturday night.
"And I would find myself drinking not because I was enjoying it but because I was trying to mask something."
The duke turned 28 in the same month he flew out for his second tour of Afghanistan, in September 2012, four months after his interview with Couric was broadcast.
Harry met the journalist at a polo match in Brazil and did a sit-down interview in which he discussed brother Prince William's wedding to Kate Middleton the year before and how sad it was that Diana was not there.
Harry told her: "No of course it was, I think she had the best seat in the house probably. She would have loved to have been there. She would have loved Kate."
He added: "When we were young it was very easy to take our grandmother for granted. She was just a grandmother to us. And it's only really sort of been over the last five, eight, ten years that I've learned to understand and accept the huge deal that she is both around the world and in the U.K."
Harry also spoke about wanting kids from a young age, an ambition he has now fulfilled with wife Meghan and their two children Archie and Lilibet.
He told Couric: "I've longed for kids since I was very, very young. So, I'm waiting to find the right person, someone who's willing to take on the job."
