GREENVILLE, N.C. – After seeing its three-match winning streak come to an end, the East Carolina soccer team will try to start a new streak as the Pirates head to William & Mary for a Sunday matinee.
"I think everyone on the team, including myself, are ready to get back out on the field," said Head Soccer Coach Jason Hamilton. "I don't think anyone in our program is happy with the last performance and want the opportunity to go back out and show what we are capable of."
ECU (4-3-0) fell to No. 5 Duke 5-0 on Thursday night, ending a three-match winning streak. The Pirates fell behind 2-0 in the opening 10 minutes and were shutout for the first time this season. A bright spot for ECU was goalkeeper Maeve English who made five saves for the Pirates, giving her 14 saves in two games against ranked opponents this season. Along with English, ECU has settled on a consistent defense, with Kim Sanford, Abby Sowa, Addison Salz and Morgan Dewey all starting each of the last five games. Sanford is the reigning AAC Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Pirates to a pair of shutouts last week as well as scoring the game-winning goal against both Campbell and VCU. Sowa and Dewey each picked up assists on those goals, with Sowa setting up Sanford's goal against Campbell and Dewey providing a cross for the tally against VCU.
The game at Duke was just the first time the Pirates have failed to score this season and the key to ECU's offense has been versatility. Nine different players have combined to score ECU's 11 goals this season, with Peyton Godbey and Sanford each scoring twice. Along with the nine goal scorers, five more Pirates have recorded an assist while Sierra Lowery and Samantha Moxie are the two Pirates with at least one goal and one assist this season. Haley McWhirter leads the Pirates with 20 shots and is one of three players to start all seven games this season, joined by Sanford and English.
William & Mary (1-4-0) started the season with a 2-1 win at American, but the Tribe has dropped four straight matches since. William & Mary saw its match against VCU, that was scheduled for Thursday night, canceled and so the Tribe have not played since falling 2-1 to Army on Sept. 3. William & Mary has struggled to score this season, grabbing just three goals in five games. Caroline Monahan is the only Tribe player with a goal and an assist this season while Elaina Longjohn and Kayleigh Shackford have also scored one goal for William & Mary. In the goal, Grace Lemley has started all five games and has a save percentage of .591.
"William & Mary have played a very tough schedule thus far so we expect them to be ready," Hamilton said. "Add it being a road game and the short rest we have compared to them, we have to be focused on the details."
William & Mary has a commanding 10-1-1 record against ECU, but the two teams have not met since 2016. The only Pirate win in the series came in 2010 when East Carolina won 2-1 in Williamsburg. The majority of the meetings came between 1994 and 2000 when the two schools were in the CAA Conference together. The Pirates have already taken on one CAA team this season, although it did not officially count on their record. ECU beat UNCW 3-0 in an exhibition match, with Samantha Moxie, Tori Riggs and Grace Doran scoring for the Pirates. ECU is 27-23-7 all-time against the current members of the CAA and are 11-8-3 following a loss since Jason Hamilton arrived prior to the 2018 season, including 2-0 this season.
"This will be a good tune-up game for us as we open conference play next week," added Hamilton.
Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., on Sunday afternoon at William & Mary's Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. The match will be broadcast on FloFC and fans can follow the live stats here.
