Behind another very fine start from José Suarez on the mound and some early offense, the Angels took down the Astros last night and bounced back from their tough loss on Friday. Now on this football baseball Sunday, they’ll try to win their second straight against Houston and end this series on a high note.
Trying to follow up Suarez’s performance will be Jaime Barria, who put in a strong effort of his own his last time out against the Rangers. In that outing, he managed to bounce back from a less than ideal start, finishing with three earned runs allowed in seven innings while retiring 13 batters in a row at one point. This was the latest stop in what has been a rollercoaster of a season for Barria, and it was perhaps his finest start since the end of July when he went 6.2 scoreless innings against the Athletics.
Barria faced this same Astros team about a month ago, where his performance was less than stellar. He got through his first two frames of that start fine enough, but the third saw Houston touch him up for three runs. That would be all for him in that game, as he finished with those three runs allowed along with seven hits in just three innings.
On the other side of the ledger is Lance McCullers Jr., someone that the Angels have gotten very familiar with this season. McCullers has faced the Halos on three separate occasions in 2021, allowing just five earned runs in 19.2 innings while striking out 22. The most recent of these starts came on August 15, where he struck out eight and allowed two runs in 5.2 innings but took home the loss after being outdueled by Reid Detmers. That game saw good performances from Shohei Ohtani, Phil Gosselin and Brandon Marsh, who combined to record six of the eight Angels hits on the day.
Angels News and Notes
- Notably absent from the Angels lineup in this one is Jo Adell, who got banged up after colliding with the left field wall in the ninth inning of last night’s game. According to Joe Maddon, Adell is just sore, and the hope is that he’ll be available to play later in Sunday’s game.
- In case you missed it, Maddon announced prior to yesterday’s game that Chris Rodriguez will not pitch again this season because of the lat strain that he suffered last month. Rodriguez finishes his rookie season with a 3.64 ERA in 29 innings over 15 games, including two starts.
