49ers will work out free-agent RBs to try to boost a unit depleted by injuries - The Athletic

The 49ers' injuries at running back continue with JaMycal Hasty, Trey Sermon and Elijah Mitchell all hurt on Sunday, as well as defensive tackle Kevin Givens.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Givens suffered a high-ankle sprain during the team's 17-11 victory over the Eagles, confirming an earlier report from The Athletic. Shanahan also said Hasty has a high-ankle sprain.

Sermon, a rookie, was making his debut on Sunday after Raheem Mostert went down with an injury last week. He fumbled on his first career play and on the same play took a brutal upper-body hit that has placed him in concussion protocol.

Another running back, Elijah Mitchell, is considered day-to-day (shoulder), so there is at least one spot to be filled. There's a good chance the 49ers won't have to fill Mitchell's roster spot, but they'll need to find a replacement for Hasty. The team will bring free agent running backs TJ Yeldon, Duke Johnson and Lamar Miller in for workouts.

Despite all the injuries, San Francisco is 2-0 to start the season.
