COSTA MESA — Joe Staley showed up Thursday back in 49ers’ garb, and he was with offensive linemen.

Staley, the former Pro Bowl left tackle and franchise captain, is giving coaching a try as the 49ers practice the Los Angeles Chargers just up the road from, well, his northern San Diego County retirement home.

“I’m pumped that he’s here,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “He’s passionate about football. He loves football. It’ll be nice to have him in the room.

“He’s never been on this side before so he’s probably going to be a little sensitive, realize how we’re not always nice what we say behind closed doors.”

Staley, 36, played left tackle for the 49ers from 2007-19, retiring after the Super Bowl LIV loss because of a neck condition. He’s stayed quite active, not only slimming down and putting in Peloton miles but by helping coach NFL draft prospects (and raising two daughters with his wife, Carrie).

The 49ers flew into Orange County on Wednesday ahead of their joint practices with the Chargers, who’ll host them in Sunday’s preseason game at SoFi Stadium.

For Staley, this SoCal visit offers him a chance to test the coaching waters, even though he is expected to join NBC Sports Bay Area’s pre- and post-game shows for this coming season. He was not available for comment Thursday.

Staley met up with the 49ers on Wednesday during the players’ day off, to which Shanahan quipped that Staley was “annoying” because he was “so amped up” for his first day on the job as a coach.

“We’ll see how he does,” Shanahan said. “I’m sure he’ll be opinionated and I’m just pumped to have him. Hopefully he enjoys it.”

As offensive linemen did warmup drills, Staley pulled aside international player Alfredo Gutierrez and offered some tips. Nearby, rookie left tackle Jaylon Moore received advice from Trent Williams, Staley’s successor last year who’s not practicing this week because of a knee swelling that required drainage.

Added Shanahan: “Yesterday was his first day working, and it was our (players’) off day. He was so amped up he was kind of annoying us all day, wanting to do more.”
