This may surprise you, but David Ortiz has some thoughts about this whole Fernando Tatis Jr. nonsense.
After the Padres' talented young shortstop blasted a grand slam Monday night on a 3-0 count with San Diego already leading by seven runs, Texas Rangers pitcher Chris Woodward called him out for violating an "unwritten rule."
"You're up by seven in the eighth inning; it's typically not a good time to swing 3-0," Woodward said after the game. "It's kind of the way we were all raised in the game."

Ortiz apparently didn't read that unwritten rule, though. When asked what he would do in Tatis' situation, the former Boston Red Sox slugger gave a blunt response.
"(Expletive), I swing," Ortiz told WEEI's Rob Bradford. "I don’t care. I don’t even know why they’re making a big deal about it."
That answer checks out for Big Papi, who mashed 25 hits on 3-0 counts over 56 career opportunities for a .446 average, per Bradford.
Ortiz is well aware of baseball's unspoken traditions, some of which he honors. But the retired Red Sox legend insisted Tatis' blast Monday night didn't cross any (imaginary) lines.
"The way guys pitch nowadays I don’t mind," Ortiz said, explaining that pitchers now throw off-speed pitches on 3-0 counts.
"... Normally when there is a big lead you normally don’t swing the bat, but it was 10-3. The pitcher put himself in that situation. Anytime teams can come back and score seven runs.
"If you told me 15-1 or something like that. But 10-3? Nope. That’s not wide open. Anything can happen."
Ortiz knows a thing or two about leading huge comebacks, so we'll take him at his word.
