Derrius Guice told the Washington Football Team that he had “anger issues” prior to his arrest and subsequent release earlier this month, according to a search warrant obtained by the Washington Post.

According to the warrant, Guice’s former girlfriend told police that the team referred Guice to counseling after he told them about his “anger issues.” He attended three sessions in January or February, according to the warrant.

Charges against Derrius Guice

Police arrested Guice on Aug. 7 on three charges of assault and battery, one count of destruction of property and a felony count of strangulation. Guice is accused of strangling his ex-girlfriend until she lost consciousness on March 13 in addition to separate instances of alleged domestic violence against her in February and April.

The team released Guice shortly after his arrest. Upon releasing Guice, the team acknowledged that it had become aware of the pending charges against him the day before. There is no indication that the team was aware of the alleged domestic violence issues until the week of his arrest.

Team declines to address warrant

The team declined to confirm the revelations from the search warrant on Friday when asked by the Post.

“We will refer you to our August 7th statement on the release of Derrius Guice which stated that the Washington Football Team learned of domestic violence-related allegations against Derrius on the day prior to his release,” a team statement to the Post reads. “... We cannot confirm or deny any information regarding a private health-related matter for one of our current or former players.”

Guice’s attorney Peter D. Greenspun also declined to discuss the warrant.

Guice was arraigned on Friday via video conference with a Loudoun County Circuit Court in Virginia. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Oct. 1, according to the Post.

Washington selected Guice out of LSU in the second round of the 2018 draft. Considered by many to be a first-round talent, he fell to the No. 59 pick amid reported off-field concerns.

Injuries stunted his first two seasons in the NFL. He was expected to play a feature role in the Washington backfield this season before he was released.
