BRADENTON, Fla. — As health experts warn against gathering in large groups over the holidays because of concerns about increases in COVID-19 cases, churches are creating ways to keep members safe for Christmas services — while helping holiday celebrations feel the same.

The Bridge Church in Bradenton has designated mask-only services as one way to keep services safe.
“There’s no manual on how to handle a pandemic as a church,” Bridge Head Pastor Mark Alt said.
Hand sanitizer is available throughout the church, and a sanitizing sprayer is used after every service.
They also are limiting the number of worshippers at services so social distancing protocols can be followed. The Bridge Church usually holds more than 400 people at services, but less than half that amount is being permitted now.
To avoid concerns about the virus being transmitted via church offering plates, the church also has a designated drop box for donations instead of passing around a plate.
“They’ve been great,” Camrin Merritt said “They feel safe here.”
Merritt, who attends services at the church, said she and her husband opt to wear a mask and the fellowship, and message, make it all worth it.
“The theme this year is hope, because this year, people need hope over everything else,” Alt said.
