Why Bears Should, Shouldn't Try to Bring Mitch Trubisky Back in 2021 - NBC Chicago

Why Bears should, shouldn't try to bring Trubisky back in '21 originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Should the Bears bring back quarterback Mitchell Trubisky for 2021 and perhaps beyond?

That’s a heated question among Chicagoans, one with an answer that could go either way, depending on who you talk to.

“I think at the right price, I think for backup money, you make him an offer,” Olin Kreutz said on the Football Aftershow. “You make him an offer that highly paid backups make and see if he takes it.”

The Bears declined Trubisky’s fifth-year option in May, meaning he can become a free agent after this season. They could take a quarterback in the upcoming NFL draft but won't make their pick until the mid-first round. And while they could look to the free agent market, the starting quarterback group is thin, not to mention they have Nick Foles under contract through 2022.

There’s also the fact Trubisky has played better the past five games after returning to the starting lineup from his Week 3 benching.

“He showed you that he’s willing — we’ve all played with guys, they get sent to the bench, quarterbacks, and they’re done,” Kreutz said. “They’re done with that team and they want to move on.

“Mitch showed you that he’ll go to the bench and still work hard at his craft and try to come back in and play better.”

The Bears are 3-2 since Trubisky returned to the starting lineup, scoring 30+ points in four straight games. Alex Brown noted the offense has changed a lot in recent weeks, however, with a bigger emphasis on running the ball.

"We’re not winning because of Mitch. Since Mitch came back, Coach Nagy has changed too," Brown said. "Twenty carries and Montgomery has gone in the same sentence a lot more the last two weeks than before."

Brown said he’d let Trubisky exit as a free agent, adding there might be a market for the 26-year-old that could be tough to pass up.

“As far as an NFL player, if you get an opportunity to play in this league, you take it,” Brown said. “You just don’t spit on a team that’s making you that offer. I don’t think he will, but I just don’t think he’s going to take backup money, not when he believes he’s a starter, he can make that big money."

What happens if Trubisky isn’t back next season?

"If he does go, what is your plan? Then you have to develop a young quarterback, which is one of the mistakes Ryan Pace has made since he got here," Kreutz said. "They don’t have a young quarterback.

"When you look at their team, it’s what would their plan be if he walks away? Because Foles isn’t the answer — we know that.”

It's sure to be a hotly debated question in the coming months.
