Angels Try to Salvage Short Series vs. Padres - Halos Heaven

After dropping back-to-back series in Cleveland and Baltimore, the Angels came back home to Anaheim looking to hit the recent button and put their recent struggles behind them. They couldn’t accomplish that on Friday thanks to the red-hot Joe Musgrove’s gem on the mound, but they’ll try again tonight seeking to snap their current three-game losing streak.

The man tasked with the assignment for the Halos for this one is Jose Suarez, who will also be trying to put his own personal cold stretch behind him. Since being moved into the starting rotation at the beginning of July, Suarez’s ERA sits at a less than stellar 5.59 mark, with the team going just 2-6 in his eight starts over that span. He’s probably pitched a little better than his lines would indicate in a lot of instances thanks to his inherited runners being allowed by the bullpen, but this stretch of games has paled in comparison to the excellent work he did as a reliever in May and June.

The Angels will need not only an effective start from Suarez tonight, but a long one, as the club’s starters have struggled mightily to go deep into games as of late. Over the last two weeks, Angels starters have pitched just 53.1 innings in 14 games played, which is tied for last in all of baseball. This has forced an already shaky bullpen to take on a larger burden, which is not a recipe for success in the long run.

If there’s one thing going for the Halos tonight, it’s that the guy on the other side of the ledger, Ryan Weathers, has not been at his best as of late. After pitching to a very nice 2.73 ERA in his first 18 appearances (12 starts) of the season, the Padres rookie starter has succumbed to the dog days of summer in a big way, posting an unsightly 14.73 mark over his last five outings. This poor performance has mainly been due to a very bad home run problem, as Weathers has allowed a whopping nine dingers over that span. For an Angels lineup that has had a problem hitting longballs over the last month or so (their 20 home runs in the month of August ranks second-worst in all of baseball), facing the struggling Weathers could be what gets them back to their early-season ways.

Angels News And Notes

  • The roster shuffle continued yet again on Saturday, as Kyle Tyler was called up to the majors for the first time prior to the game. Tyler started the season in AA and spent most of the year there until being moved to AAA three weeks ago, where he made five appearances. In the corresponding move, Cooper Criswell was sent back to Salt Lake.
  • The other roster move the Angels made before this one was outrighting Aaron Slegers to AAA after he cleared waivers.
  • Joe Maddon made some changes to the lineup for this one, most notably moving Jo Adell into the cleanup spot. In addition to this, he also moved David Fletcher back up to the top of the lineup and Shohei Ohtani back to his customary No. 2 spot.
