Here are 5 epic ice cream sundaes to try before summer is over - OregonLive

Summer won’t last forever. Soon enough, you will be snuggled on your couch at 4 p.m. while the sun sets and soft rain (hopefully) taps on your roof.

But not yet. Now is the time to seize the sunny day and eat something cold and decadent. The Summer of the Vaccine isn’t over yet. Celebrate with one, or better yet, all of these delicious ice cream sundaes.

Portlanders love their donuts and their ice cream. But what if I told you there was a place where you didn’t have to choose between a donut treat or an ice cream treat? If you haven’t had heard of Angels on Alberta and in Vancouver (formerly Tonallis), you are missing out on this dream-like possibility.

Here the donut sundae ($5.20) possibilities are basically limitless. Choose any donut, choose any ice cream, choose any toppings. There are no wrong answers.

Cold ice cream and a fresh donut are perfect companions. I chose a cake donut with blackberry frosting and sprinkles and a scoop of Death by Chocolate with caramel sauce and mini M&Ms. My plan, since I was eating a lot of ice cream sundaes for this story, was just to take a few bites.

That plan was a miserable failure. By the time I found a garbage can, most of the dessert was gone. It was just too good -- a delightful combination of textures, temperatures and tastes.

This may not be the most Instagrammable sundae you will purchase this summer, but that doesn’t matter. You don’t eat an Angels sundae for Instagram. You eat it for yourself.

Is it even summer if you don’t eat an ice cream sundae by the Sandy River? When it comes to soft-serve, Sugarpine Drive-In does it just right.

Full disclosure: I played soccer with co-owner Emily Cafazzo in middle and high school, but that hasn’t colored my opinion on her creations, the popularity of which can be judged by the fact that Sugarpine’s new covered space overlooking the river on the edge of Troutdale was already hopping before noon on a recent Friday. The Turtle Brownie sundae ($6) was a dream, with generous brownies, caramel sauce, tasty crumbly bits and candied pecans over creamy chocolate soft serve.

As always, Sugarpine is worth the drive.

There isn’t a fresher treat than a crepe sundae from Mojo Crepes. I stood in front of the counter on Southeast Division Street and 84th Avenue and watched as the woman behind the counter poured out the batter for the crepe and then cut up strawberries while it cooked.

When the crepe was done, she drizzled it with blackberry sauce and scooped Death by Chocolate on top (yes, I love chocolate). At some point, blueberries were added to the equation, before it was wrapped up and topped with whipped cream.

The most impressive part of the whole experience was how well the final product was sealed up and served, so I could sit on a bench and luxuriate in a chocolate-y, berry-filled crepe in the sunshine and only spill the smallest amount of melting ice cream on my pants.

It was worth it, but I would suggest grabbing some napkins on your way out.

Cheese and Crack sundae at Cheese and Crack

My first try at a Cheese and Crack sundae happened on a Sunday afternoon but the line was down the block and it was too hot and still too much of a pandemic for me to stand in that kind of line. So I took my toddler through the McDonald’s drive-thru and we split a classic hot fudge sundae with extra hot fudge ($3.39) and, sadly, no peanuts because they don’t do peanuts anymore.

My second attempt, on a Monday, went much better. I ordered the eponymous Cheese and Crack sundae ($8), even though I really dislike the name of what I would rather call Portland’s Dairy Church.

This sundae is a take on a s’more: torched marshmallow fluff atop layers of vanilla soft serve, graham cracker crumbles and chocolate ganache.

It was tasty — this spot always delivers delicious lactose-heavy treats. The soft serve is thick, creamy and cold and the ganache is several steps up from your regular chocolate sauce. Plus, who can resist torched marshmallow fluff? But as an avowed hater of lines, I stand by my choice to opt for the similar-looking McDonalds version if you’re looking at a long wait.

By the end of a week of eating over-the-top ice cream desserts, it was a pleasure to enjoy my final sundae, a simple, berry-filled, magic-shelled ice cream, on a plastic Adirondack chair on a warm night off of Northeast Fremont.

Beaux Berry is a food cart with two locations, one of which is parked next to Tacovore in Beaumont-Wilshire. They have an impressively big menu for a small cart, but their speciality is mixing ice cream with berries for a soft-serve-esque experience. I opted for the mixed berry in a mini size ($4.25) (thankfully they have a mini size) and topped it off with chocolate magic shell and sprinkles, both for the pictures and for the toddler I was once again sharing with.

We both agreed it was a rare treat -- smooth, tart and sweet, with that nostalgic crunch of a chocolate shell. Nostalgic for me, anyway, but I was happy to be passing that specific joy on to the next generation.
