Will the Browns try to trade for a Stephon Gilmore or Xavien Howard? Hey, Mary Kay! - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio — In this week’s Hey, Mary Kay! I answer questions about the Patriots’ Stephon Gilmore, Kareem Hunt, and more.

Hey, Mary Kay: Will the Browns trade for a Stephon Gilmore or Xavien Howard during training camp? — Sean N., Chicago, Ill.

Hey, Sean: I don’t anticipate that happening at this point. The only way the Browns would trade for a big-name player such as a Gilmore or Howard in camp or early on in the season is if they lose one of their starting cornerbacks for the season.

As they head into camp this week, they’re happy with their three outside cornerbacks in Denzel Ward, Greg Newsome II and Greedy Williams, who’s making a great comeback from his shoulder surgery.

New England’s Gilmore, who’s set to turn 31 in September, is grossly underpaid this year at just under $8 million, so it’s no wonder he’s seeking fair market value. For comparison’s sake, the Rams’ Jalen Ramsey is tops in the NFL at $20 million a year.

Gilmore is in the final year of his contract, so a trade would have to come with an extension to justify surrendering a draft pick.

With big paydays coming up for Baker Mayfield, Ward, Nick Chubb, and probably Wyatt Teller, the Browns don’t want to upset the salary structure at cornerback if they don’t have to.

As for Howard, 28, he’s intriguing because he led the NFL with 10 interceptions last season, and those picks are worth a lot. But he’s under contract for four more years at an average of $15.05 million, and also wants more money. Again, the only way I see it happening is if the Browns lose one of their starters for the season.

Hey, Mary Kay: D’Ernest Johnson ran well while Nick Chubb was out, particularly in the Dallas game. Do you think the Browns are open to offers for Kareem Hunt? — Scott Courson, Wooster, Ohio.

Hey, Scott: I don’t think the Browns are open to offers for Hunt, even though they have Johnson and now sixth-round pick Demetric Felton on the roster. The Browns expect to make a run at the Super Bowl this year, and they need all the top-notch players they can get. If Chubb misses time again like he did last season, Hunt can step in and almost not miss a beat in the run game, and he adds so much in the passing game. I think his role will be even bigger this season, now that the Browns really see what he can do and how much heart and soul he plays with.

With the Browns playing 17 regular-season games and possibly three or four more playoff games, they’ll need to rely heavily on their depth. I know that folks immediately thought of Hunt when Rams RB Cam Akers suffered a torn Achilles last week, but I don’t see the Browns parting with Hunt.

Hey, Mary Kay: Which up-and-coming free agents can you expect the Browns to show potential little interest in resigning, like Wyatt Teller and his situation. Also, are there any current players at less valued positions that the Browns don’t have immense interest in keeping for the future? — Colton James, Cleveland, Ohio

Hey, Colton: I think the Browns would like to keep the band together as much as possible with this current group of players. They have quality starters and good depth at most positions, and they’ll try to re-sign most of their good players.

Some will be up in the air, such as a David Njoku, whose contract is up after this season. Much will depend on how things go with him this season, and if the Browns are willing to pay him what he can get on the open market. He seems to be bought into the program this season, and that should translate into good production. I think they’ll try to re-sign safety Ronnie Harrison, who’s in the final year of his contract at $2.183 million. This regime will always try to acquire good, young talent, and then work hard to keep it.

Hey, Mary Kay: I keep hearing about our pass rushers but where is Olivier Vernon in the discussion? I know he’s overcoming injury, but what’s next for him? — Christian M. Gaffney, Centreville, Va.

Hey, Christian: Vernon’s $11 million contract expired after the season, and the Browns didn’t re-sign him while he was recovering from surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles suffered in the season-ending victory over the Steelers. If Vernon hadn’t suffered the injury, the Browns would’ve seriously considered bringing him back this year after he stepped it up following Myles Garrett’s bout with COVID-19 and the lingering effects. Vernon, who notched nine sacks in his last eight games, is still recovering from the surgery, and hasn’t announced whether or not he’ll return to the field. In the meantime, the Browns signed Jadeveon Clowney and Takk McKinley to replace him.
