Anxious To Try Windows 11? Watch Out For Malware! - Forbes

Earlier this summer Microsoft unleashed the first public preview of its next big thing: Windows 11. A lot of people are understandably eager to try out the software that will eventually replace Windows 10 — and some are learning the hard way that you should stick to downloading software from official channels.

Go searching for the Windows 11 installer somewhere else and there’s a very good chance you’ll wind up downloading annoying adware — or worse, full-blown malware.

It’s easy enough to see why this is happening. The next version of Windows is always hotly anticipated, and computing enthusiasts are eager to get a sneak peek whenever the opportunity arises.

Cybercriminals know this all too well. They’re ready to spring into action and flood popular download sites with bogus installers.

Researchers at Kaspersky Lab have been tracking a number of threats masquerading as a Windows 11 installer or Windows 11 download tool.

The most harmless will lead a hapless downloader through an installation process that’s craftily designed to trick victims into installing “sponsored” software they probably don’t want. Kaspersky notes that many of these apps wouldn’t be detected as actual malware by security software, but they are considered Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs).

Other unofficial downloads are packed, Kaspersky adds, with malware such as trojans and password stealers.

There’s a simple way to protect yourself against these very serious threats if you want to give Windows 11 a try. Just follow Microsoft’s instructions.

The first thing you need to do is to register to be a Windows Insider. Windows Insiders get early access to Microsoft software that’s not yet ready for distribution to the general public.

Once Microsoft has made you part of the Insider program you’re ready for “flight.” Microsoft refers to running Insider software on your computer as “flighting.”

There will be bumps along the way. Apps may crash. Some of your hardware may not work properly. That’s to be expected — the whole point of inviting insiders to test Windows 11 is to identify potential problems and fix them before release day.

Microsoft may ask you for feedback along the way, too. Don’t underestimate the power of your submissions. With Windows 10, Microsoft showed that it was very willing to take suggestions and critiques from Insiders and make changes to the operating system based on that user input.
