Cam Newton expected to try practicing at Patriots minicamp despite hand injury - Boston Herald

Patriots quarterback Cam Newton is expected to try to practice during the team’s three-day, mandatory minicamp this week despite a recent injury to his throwing hand, a source told the Herald.

Newton originally injured his right hand during a positional drill at an OTA practice on June 4. He was not present for the next voluntary practice open to the media last Thursday. Pats coach Bill Belichick confirmed Newton’s injury isn’t considered serious.

“He’s not out there,” Belichick said Thursday, “but I think he’ll be all right, yeah.”

Newton was present for the team’s final OTA practice on Friday, as first reported by ESPN. He threw passes and “looked good,” the source said. Belichick named Newton his starting quarterback in late April less than an hour after drafting first-round rookie Mac Jones, who divided all the quarterback reps last Thursday with backups Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer.

Monday’s minicamp practice is scheduled to open at 10:45 a.m. outside Gillette Stadium.
