BROOK PARK, Ohio – For Brook Park neighborhoods where residents experience the most frequent basement flooding, environmental mats installed over storm sewer grates in the street could be an interim fix until future detention basins can be constructed.
Mayor Mike Gammella told City Council at its June 15 meeting he will begin a pilot program for areas “that experience more flooding than usual.” He spoke with an official in a nearby city, he said, where discussions about retention and detention basins led to the possible positive impact of using the mats.
“Putting these mats over the catch basins slows down the water going into the storm sewers and filters out the silt,” Gammella explained. “The bad part is, the water remains on the street. However, if I’m a homeowner, I’d rather have water out on the street and not in my basement.”
He said the mats already were ordered and have arrived. Service Director Randy Garner said the sewer grate lids will be lifted off and the mats zip-tied to them. The lids then will be secured back in place.
“The mats will require some maintenance as the ties break,” Garner told council. “It will take some time to install them, possibly three weeks or so, depending on the manpower situation.”
“We’re going to try this out,” Gammella added, noting the mats are reasonably inexpensive. “We will be having meetings with the residents of those streets and letting them know what to expect. Until we get these detention basins built, maybe these mats might be the ticket to help out our residents.”
Councilman Brian Poindexter suggested a city rain barrel program could be instituted to alleviate some flooding as well.
“That’s an excellent idea,” Gammella said. “The more water we can take off the streets, the better.”
