NEW HAVEN — Police were investigating the fatal shooting of a driver who crashed his vehicle into the side of a building late Saturday in the Fair Haven neighborhood, police said Sunday.
Officers responding to a ShotSpotter alert of gunfire near Grand Avenue at Lloyd Street at 8:30 p.m. found a motor vehicle had slammed into a commercial building at 337 Grand Ave., police said in a statement.
They also found that the driver, a 32-year-old New Haven man, had been shot, police said.
Before the shooting, police said they believe the man was sitting in his parked car on Grand Avenue. After he was shot, the “injured motorist drove across the Lloyd Street intersection” and hit the building, police said.
“New Haven Fire Department and American Medical Response personnel arrived and an ambulance transported the motorist to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased,” a police statement said.
The driver was not identified by police.
The New Haven Police Department’s Major Crimes detectives and Bureau of Identification forensic detectives responded to the crime scene to investigate the homicide.
Anyone with information about the fatal shooting is asked to contact the NHPD at 203-946-6304. Callers may remain anonymous.
