Red Sox legend David Ortiz tested positive for COVID-19 and has since recovered, he revealed Friday night during NESN’s broadcast of the Red Sox-Yankees game. Ortiz said he was asymptomatic.
“Yeah, man. I just got it. I just had my last test yesterday,” he said. “Thank God, I tested negative. I had it asymptomatic, so my one wasn’t that bad. My brother got it real bad, had to be in the hospital for about a week. He had to lose like 25 pounds. Man, this is no joke. You don’t realize how crazy this is until it hits home. I learned so much about this COVID-19 thing while i was going through the process. It’s something -- it’s an experience, to be honest with you.”
Ortiz, who turns 45 in November, is currently in the Dominican Republic. The nine-time All-Star is currently a special assistant for the Red Sox but has not been able to visit the team at Fenway Park this year due to the protocols put in place by Major League Baseball to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
The Red Sox had four players -- Eduardo Rodriguez, Bobby Dalbec, Josh Taylor and Darwinzon Hernandez-- test positive for COVID-19 at the beginning of summer training camp but haven’t registered any positive tests since.
