Syracuse, N.Y. -- The play that left Syracuse fans buzzing on Saturday afternoon might have surprised many, but the two defensive backs involved had talked frequently about breaking out the risky maneuver if the time was right.
Ja’Had Carter might have clinched Syracuse’s 37-20 win over Georgia Tech on Saturday with the team’s fourth interception of quarterback Jeff Sims, but his lateral to Trill Williams for a defensive touchdown will leave a longer-lasting impression and certainly led to a much better highlight.
The defensive play and subsequent score gave the Orange a 17-point lead with 8:10 remaining in the game and ended the afternoon for Sims. It also erased any doubts about which team would leave the Carrier Dome with a needed win.
“That was just a crazy play because, throughout the weeks, we’re roommates, so we talked about, ‘Hey if you catch a pick and think you’re about to get tackled just pitch it back,' " Williams said. "We were joking how Deion (Sanders) used to do when he was with the Cowboys. It just happened today.”
Carter, a freshman, made the interception and, as he ran into a wall of Georgia Tech defenders and had no escape, he had enough time to pause, look for his roommate and, apparently, to even make eye contact.
“I called for it,” Williams said. “I was screaming his name, ‘Ja! Ja!’ He looked back and made eye contact. I was like, ‘Yeah, we’re about to do this.’ ”
Williams' positioning, and the fact that Carter had attracted so many potential tacklers, allowed him to turn the corner and follow a convoy of blockers into the end zone.
Williams, a junior, has a history of those plays. The defensive back ended Syracuse’s final game last season with an overtime strip-and-score against Wake Forest, taking that for a touchdown as well and giving the Orange a rare nine-point overtime win.
Neither play was the safest. And maybe they weren’t the smartest. But, man, they were fun.
“I think we give our guys a little freedom and they definitely take advantage of it,” Syracuse head coach Dino Babers said. “Some things are not as free as others but we do have a bottom-line result thing. And the bottom-line result is you better score because if you don’t you will be taking out the trash for a long time in this family. It seems like Trill always seems to come out on the right end.”
