HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - Day 7 of the current heat wave featured an unusual event for the past week: namely, a better coverage of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. While many areas did stay dry, the zone from the River Cities of Huntington-Ashland-Ironton along I-64 to Charleston did see the storm clouds threaten followed by a brisk and thundery shower.
The mere .06″ of rain that fell in Huntington brought the monthly total to a paltry 1 inch. Putting that number into perspective, July is often in the top 3 wettest months of the year averaging 4.5 inches. So the 1″ is way below normal and coming on the heels of a dry second half of June, the parched spell is already taking its toll on our trees as some leaves are browning and falling like last year (except this year it is in mid-summer not late summer-early fall).
Looking ahead, Tuesday will be another day of steam-bath heat with the risk of a repeat performance from scattered afternoon showers and thunder. Highs look to crest in the 90s again.
Wednesday’s shower and thunder threat is even higher and so strong in fact that the chance of a sub 90-degree day due to earlier clouds and showers compared to other days is rated a 50-50 affair.
Late week clouds and showers may finally end the 90-degree streak, but buyer beware as a new surge of heat will unfold by the weekend.
