Standing desks are common in offices but less so in homes, partly because they take up a lot of space, and tend to be pricey. This is a problem now that so many people are working at home because of the COVID-19 pandemic and could really use a high-quality stand-up workstation.
A company called Work From Home Desks has a potential solution with minimalist and modular workstations made of wood. Shipped in pieces, these desks come together in a jiffy without tools. They are surprisingly stable even when laden down with computer equipment, which can include multiple displays.
They’re versatile, too, with the option to set them up as either standing or sitting desks. Switching between the modes takes a bit of time because the desks have to be torn down and then built back up, but it’s easy.
Add-ons include shelves in a variety of shapes and sizes — such as a small, square platform upon which to put a laptop or a display at eye level while using a keyboard and mouse on the primary work surface.
At just under $400, the desks are not exactly steals, and some traditional, motorized standing desks can be found at roughly that price. But the wooden desks’ versatility and collapsibility are a plus in cramped residential spaces — dismantle and stow the desk under a bed when it isn’t needed, or move it from place to place.
The desks are available in black and “blonde” (light-colored wood) shadings.
Work From Home Desks also provides a kid desk with a matching stool for $269.
