MUSKEGON, MI – These days, it’s safest to eat outside - and in a lakeside town like Muskegon, waterfront dining just might offer the best case scenario during a pandemic.
Located at the Harbour Towne Marina, off the channel between Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan, Dockers Fish House, 3505 Marina View Point, has been highlighted by MLive’s Michigan’s Best in the past as a top restaurant to visit in 2020.
And while 2020 has not exactly been the year anyone was hoping for, Dockers has readjusted for the summer, and is back to operating during its usual hours, seven days a week, and offering much of its standard menu.
If you visit, manager James Curtis recommends the New England-style lobster roll or the famed lobster mac and cheese. If you’re feeling adventurous - or extra hungry - try the feast: a platter full of crab legs, crawfish, shrimp, mussels, baked potatoes, and veggies.
Cold drinks are special, too, including a Michigan Cherry Mule, composed of True North Cherry Vodka, distilled at the Grand Traverse Distillery in Traverse City with cherry bitters and ginger beer, and a slushy, frozen sangria.
And the adventurous should try the boozy blackberries, soaked in vodka in house, and up to the customer to customize, by mixing with tonic, soda pop, or juice.
The seafood restaurant and bar is still short on some menu items, thanks to disruptions in the global supply chain caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Food prices are really high,” Curtis told MLive. “At the grocery store they’re high, and for restaurants they’re high.”
That means prime rib is off the menu, as is that favored Friday night staple: fried perch.
“People love (it) but it’s very hard to get – it’s overfished,” so the price is high and quality is low, Curtis said.
But there’s also been room for creativity, including weekly features whipped up by chef Alex Tripp, like a Thai green curry with lobster that made its debut this weekend.
There’s also been live music out on the deck, but with smaller acts.
“So, there’s still a fun atmosphere, but nothing crazy,” said Curtis.
There is curbside pickup for people spending the day at Pere Marquette, and even boatside pickup for visitors to the marina.
“We’re trying to get people back to as normal as possible,” Curtis said.
Dockers is open Monday through Thursday, 12 to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 12 to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 7 p.m. Contact the restaurant at 231-755-0400.
