Looking for a new restaurant to try this month?
Arizona Republic dining critic Dominic Armato has you covered.
Here are three recently-opened restaurants around metro Phoenix that not only offer contract-free takeout or delivery, but also promise a delicious meal. The lineup of must-try restaurants for July includes a downtown Phoenix restaurant that's nailed takeout sushi and sashimi and a soul food powerhouse operating out of a cloud kitchen in Tempe. Lastly, there's a west Valley destination for unfussy but excellent pizza.
Here are three new restaurants to try around metro Phoenix.
PREMIUM: Here are 3 of the best Korean restaurants for takeout and delivery
Kaizen
Conceptually Social’s new Latin-Japanese omakase restaurant was born into the midst of the restaurant apocalypse. But owners Kyu Utsunomiya and Troy Watkins, along with chef Gustavo Muñoz, are banking on a vision of portable dining that can capture the quality and refinement of high-end fare and stand on its own until brighter times return.
For now, that positions Kaizen as a premium carryout experience, operating two nights a week from downtown Phoenix with a 5-mile in-house delivery range.
For a curbside order that traveled 25 minutes, the dishes I sampled were awfully impressive.
Muñoz makes a nice karaage, tender little nubbins of chicken thigh that are battered, fried and dusted with togarashi. I wager his pork gyoza are outstanding fresh out of the pan, but they’re awfully good after a bit of a drive as well.
Sashimi specials are beautifully balanced and composed, not to mention gorgeous to behold, even in a takeout container. Sliced octopus dressed with slivers of tomatillo and the slow burn of an aji amarillo puree is lovely, but I was even more enamored of creamy slabs of raw scallop, paired with shaved onions and bathed in a bright, herbaceous aguachile with a stab of serrano and yuzu kosho.

Hint of Soul
A plucky little soul food joint operating out of a Tempe cloud kitchen — where multiple restaurateurs offer takeout and delivery from a shared space — Hint of Soul launched on June 2, navigating a nontraditional path to bring fried chicken, wings, Cajun pasta and seafood boils to the people.
Wings are the thing, and the sauces are solid. A pungent, garlicky butter sauce is finished with a dusting of Parmesan cheese, and her signature peach Hennessy wings play like a sweet and fruity Asian chile sauce with a little whiff of cognac. But I find myself drawn to her Chicago sweet heat, a dry rub with a swipe of oil that’s at once salty, hot and laced with sugar.
Owner Lynn Minor’s “Kickin Kajun” pasta, a decadent mess of cream and Cajun spice, is a bit of a tricky dish for travel. But I was impressed by just how well her Saturday seafood boil made the trip. Potatoes, corn, a whole link of smoked sausage and shrimp or crab clusters are drenched in a garlicky butter sauce that goes down slick and easy with a little chile warmth. Most impressively, the shell-on shrimp were tender and sweet — not the least bit overcooked, despite a long drive in a sealed container.

Reel Pizza Pies
Kaleb Copenhaver has been slinging pizza since he was a teenager, but the 22-year-old struck out on his own for the first time in May, opening Reel Pizza Pies, a counter service pizza joint in Surprise.
This restaurant is tiny, but it’s pushing some big flavors.
Copenhaver is ramping up the menu, starting on the basics with plans for the future. Currently the most exotic thing on the list is a barbecue chicken pizza, and everything else is aimed right down the middle of the road.
That’s not a knock. Most of it is really good.
The care shows in the crust.
Copenhaver slings a NY-style pie, broad and fairly thin with a well-developed undercarriage. No commercial yeast here — he uses a wild yeast sourdough starter — and the result is a sturdy crisp and a hefty chew with a subtle sourdough tang.
REEL PIZZA:This new restaurant proves pizza doesn't have to be fancy to be good
