CLEVELAND, Ohio - We opened our palates considerably this summer, trying a range of beers from 4.2% to 10%. We sipped beers made all over, from Iceland to Israel. Our monthly reviews cover out-of-region beers all available in Northeast Ohio retail distribution. We offer flavor profiles you can expect, and we’ll also list our favorites. Email us and let us know what you like or don’t prefer. Or suggest a beer you’ve seen in local distribution we should try. Cheers!
Einstok Icelandic Wee Heavy
Einstok, Iceland, Scottish Ale, 8% alcohol
Caramel, burnt flavors and brown sugar all come out in this deliciously smooth sipper that is not over the top at 8% alcohol. No chocolate bomb here at all. Good body with barely a hint of alcohol on the tail end. A hearty break from lighter ales this time of year.
Leisure Lagoon
Coronado Brewing Co., Coronado, California; Hazy Pale Ale, 5.5% alcohol
Lemon is there and hops slowly rise before kicking up on the finish, but that's about it. No big citrus or other flavors. Quite a bit more carbonation than I would have expected. I have enjoyed beers from this brewery in the past but find this to be one-dimensional.
The Finnish Long Drink
The Long Drink Co., F.X. Matt Brewing Co., Utica, New York; Long Drink, 5.5% alcohol
This one technically is not a beer but is somewhat similar to Shandys and is made for a summer sipper, so we thought we'd include it here. The style has roots to the Helsinki Summer Games of 1952. Lemon - like a lemon icy - is the dominant flavor, but there's a dryness of gin that follows the sweetness. Its light milky look is the color of sealant. Drink The Long Drink on a hot day. (Here's more on the history of the drink.)
Skiesta
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. (collaborating with Teton Gravity Research), Chico California, and Mills River, North Carolina; Bavarian-style lager, 5.2% alcohol
While some lagers we've tried in recent reviews have leaned sweet, this goes in the opposite direction. It's dry, with a bit of a bready taste. Refreshing from a great brewery that consistently hits the mark. This one is brewed with the unique combination of Magnum, Tradition and Spalter hops. The name is a portmanteau of "Ski" and "Fiesta."
Surf
Stillwater Artisanal (North Haven, Connecticut) and Evil Twin Brewing (Denmark), Imperial Gose, 7.4% alcohol
OK, this gets the nod for most creative we’ve seen in a while: It’s brewed with shrimp, lobster, lemon and sea salt. To be honest, other than a very faint briny flavor on the finish, this one is a typical Gose, its tart and salty flavor offering a bit of lemon and that’s about it. Gose fans will enjoy.
Twice as Nice
Hi-Wire Brewing Co., Asheville, North Carolina; Doppelbock Lager, 10% alcohol
Flavors of root beer and a hint of coffee. Definite malt base, but hops also knock on the door a bit in this beer that hits double digits in alcohol percentage. It's no surprise you can taste the alcohol.
Goldstar
Tempo Beer Industries, Israel, Dark Lager, 4.9% alcohol
This is a rare one for us - a beer from Israel. This has a layered taste, with hops hitting first followed by the malts. It leaves a pleasing taste of caramel on the finish.
Jeremiah Red
BJ's Brewhouse, Temple, Texas; Irish-style Ale, 7.3% alcohol
Good body, definite a malty beer, but the hops make their presence known. Root-beer notes and a bit alcoholic tasting, which is surprising because it weighs in at a not-overwhelming 7.3%. Northeast Ohio BJs Brewhouse locations are in Fairlawn, Canton North Olmsted, Mentor and Youngstown. The beer is made in Texas and shipped in.
Hazy Hero
Revolution Brewing, Chicago, Hazy India Pale Ale, 7.3% alcohol
Orange pith in both aroma and taste. Also a smidgen piney in the nose with grapefruit in aroma and on the palate. Solid mouthfeel and tastes all of its 7.3% alcohol. A solid effort for those in the mood for a Hazy.
Voodoo Love Child
Voodoo Brewery, Meadville, Pennsylvania; Belgian-style Ale aged on fruit, 9.2% alcohol
There's a definite Belgian base here to be sure with dried cherry flavor. The finish is dry. No alcohol on taste despite its healthy percentage. Well done. Voodoo opened a brewery in Cleveland Heights last year.
Vibrant P’Ocean
Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Milton, Delaware, in collaboration with Rodenbach of Belgium, sour ale, 4.7% alcohol
This mellow sour has restrained fruit and a bit of dryness. It's brewed with elderberry, elderflower and fleur de sel - high-end sea salt from France translating as "flower of salt." The muddy-magenta colored ale is not sweet and restrained in alcohol.
Saint Archer Gold
Saint Archer Brewery, San Diego, 4.2% alcohol
A slight sweetness come through with no big finish. Definitely light-bodied. Smells like budget beer, and while smooth enough with no off flavors, it's nothing to write home about. MillerCoors acquired the brewery in 2015 and this year ramped up national distribution. The beer is seen as a challenge to Anheuser-Busch's Michelob Ultra. Saint Archer Gold has 95 calories and 2.6 carbs.
Hell
Surly Brewing Co., Minneapolis and Brooklyn Center, Minnesota; Lager, 5% alcohol
Peach notes come out in this deliciously smooth, very hoppy and quaffable lager. Made with Sterling hops. We haven't had a bad beer from this brewery.
Favorites of the month: Hell, Einstok and Skiesta.
