FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA21) -- We take a look at public transportation in Fort Wayne and what is being done to protect passengers -- including deep cleaning to try to help keep COVID-19 at bay.
With passengers coming into the Summit City from all over the country and even outside it, hand sanitizer stations are all over Fort Wayne International Airport.
Every year for the past four years, the airport has broken records for the number of passengers flying in and out.
The executive director says that means it's crucial to keep surfaces as disinfected as possible.
"We make sure the product that we're using is truly disinfectant and we are wiping down and using the high touch areas a little more diligently than we maybe have in the past.we've always been a pretty clean facility but we are just working on those high touch areas a little bit more," says Scott Hinderman.
We did see one woman wearing a mask as she went through the security checkpoint.
She told us she hadn't been feeling well with what she believed was a cold, so she was wearing a mask to help prevent any of her germs from infecting any other people.
"We have over a million six as far as our ridership annually, so we have quite a few passengers on our buses," says Citilink General Manager Maurice Pearl.
Citilink's general manager says in this time of the spreading epidemic, employees are not only doing regular preventive measures, like spraying on a strong, leave-in decontaminant every night on every bus, they're also deep cleaning entire buses, one at a time.
He says a lot of that depends on the drivers, who are told to keep an eye out for any passenger who may appear to be ill or who shows symptoms like excessive coughing or sneezing.
"We'll take a bus out of service if we need to and make sure that it's cleaned and that we have everything appropriately done to it and sanitized appropriately," Pearl says.
While Citilink's cleaning supplier is limiting how many boxes of chemicals it can order at one time, Pearl says he doesn't anticipate that supplier running out of anything employees will need to clean buses properly.
Proper sanitary procedures will also be posted in buses listing the same measures recommended by the CDC for everyone: to cough and sneeze into your elbow, wash your hands with very warm water while singing the ABC song at least once all the way through, and staying home if you feel sick.
