Gas station food offers a cornucopia of culinary options: Here are 5 places to try - Daily News Journal

If you thought drive-in markets were just for gas and snacks, think again. These days you may as well call them fuel stations, because you can fill up your car and your belly at the same place.

You no longer have to settle for chips, sodas and candy bars for road trips or a quick bite to eat. Many gas stations now offer a cornucopia of food options beyond the hot dog roller and refrigerator case sandwiches.

Now that dining rooms are closed and there's takeout only, this may be good time to branch out from the norm and try some gas station fare.

We tried five of Murfreesboro's gas station food options and here's what we think.

Speedway

Like Waffle House, Speedway is open 24 hours a day and so is the griddle. Touch screens allow you to customize your made-to-order meal. You'll find multiple locations around Rutherford County.

You can get eggs, cheese, bacon, sausage and ham on biscuits, English muffins and bagels, or tucked inside a wrap. Best of all, breakfast hours start at midnight and run until noon.

We tried a sampling of the lunch menu: cheese-topped tater tots, a grilled steak wrap, chicken-bacon-ranch sub sandwich and an Italian panini.

A favorite was the panini, made with salami, pepperoni and ham.

Doughnuts are baked daily in-house, but this confection is not a strong point for Speedway.

If you don't have time to wait, there's a grab-and-go case.

Laredo Taco

Based in Texas, Laredo Taco Company stores in Tennessee are located inside Exxon Tiger Marts. You'll find a serving line filled with Tex-Mex favorites like seasoned meats, beans and rice served in tacos, quesadillas, nachos, bowls and plates.

One thing this gas station food has going for it is price. You can eat a full meal, whatever form you choose, for less than $6. Big portions. If you're really hungry and want to eat on the cheap, this is the place to do it.

The flour tortillas are also handmade to order, making them fluffy yet sturdy.

Our team tried the steak quesadilla, chicken and beef tacos — they were more like big burritos — and a barbacoa plate with rice and beans. We also got prepackaged tamales we had to heat and eat.

Nothing we got was spicy, which is unusual for Tex-Mex. The chicken and beef had flavor, but not overpowering. The barbacoa was very greasy, but I think if we'd had it earlier in the day, it would have been better. The tamales were pretty good considering they were prepackaged.

White Bison

Gas station coffee has been more like a necessity than a choice. Then White Bison Coffee opened inside the Twice Daily convenience market at 110 John Rice Blvd. in Murfreesboro.

This integrated market-coffee shop concept features premium beverages made by a trained barista, from espresso and cappuccinos to nitro cold brew, along with artisan teas and Italian sodas.

White Bison also serves pastries, gourmet sandwiches and salads, fruit, cookies and parfaits, among other healthy food and drink options.

There's a drive-thru or you can order at the counter.

It's fast, convenient and the products are comparable to other artisan coffee shops, but a little cheaper. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

If you don't have time to wait for a made-to-order food item, there is a big refrigerated case full of handmade quick-grab options.

Although the market is open 24 hours a day, White Bison is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Dodge's Market

Located at 510 N.W. Broad St. in Murfreesboro, Dodge's is a prime example of all the things you love about gas station food: fried, high-calorie, hand-held comfort food.

The array of offerings has grown over the years, too. At one time there were potato wedges and chicken tenders. Now you'll find egg rolls, quesadillas, giant turkey legs, chicken wings, corn dogs and fried pies.

Taqueria Lupita

The old adage, "You can't judge a book by its cover," is a great way to describe Taqueria Lupita.

Tucked inside a "vintage" gas station at 1629 Bradyville Pike is a Mexican lunch counter that serves some of the best street tacos, as well as tortas.

There are a couple of tables as well as a bar where you can enjoy your meal. You'll find a wide selection of Mexican drinks like Jarritos soda and Jumex nectar and juices.

It's truly a hole-in-the-wall kind of place, and one loyal fans return to over and over because the food is so good. Don't let the aging exterior keep you from experiencing the authentic Mexican food there.
