Hogs lose at Ole Miss after failed 2-point try - WholeHogSports

Arkansas threw incomplete on a two-point try with no time remaining and lost 52-51 in a thrilling top-25 matchup at Ole Miss on Saturday.

KJ Jefferson threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Warren Thompson as time expired, but overthrew Treylon Burks on the two-point try, allowing the Rebels to hold on in one of the most offensive games in SEC history.

The teams combined for 1,287 yards of offense, including 775 after halftime. Only nine other SEC games have had more yards.

Arkansas had 676 yards, which was its most ever in an SEC game and fourth-highest total in any game.

The No. 13 Razorbacks (4-2, 1-2 SEC) dropped their second straight game.

"It was a heck of a football game and obviously we were a point short," Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said. "I’m proud of the effort of the kids, but we made way too many mistakes on defense.

"We could not tackle, the ball got behind us several times — just not a very good defensive performance, obviously."

The No. 17 Rebels took a 52-45 lead on Matt Corral’s 68-yard touchdown pass to Braylon Sanders with 1:07 remaining.

One year after he threw six interceptions in a loss at Arkansas, Corral passed for 287 yards and 2 touchdowns, and rushed 15 times for 94 yards and 2 touchdowns.

"The guy threw the ball lights out, ran the ball against a really good run defense for almost 100 yards rushing," Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin said. "That’s the second-best pass defense in the country coming in, statistically, without arguably his best receiver.”

The long touchdown pass to Sanders answered an Arkansas score 15 seconds earlier, when Jefferson ran for a 10-yard touchdown to tie the game at 45 apiece after the extra point.

Trailing 52-45, Jefferson led the Razorbacks 75 yards in 1:07 to tie the game. He overthrew Burks on first-and-goal from the 9, but the clock stopped with 1 second on the incompletion.

Jefferson lofted a touchdown pass to Thompson on the next play.

Pittman said he liked the two-point call, which included an underneath option for a shovel pass to running back Dominique Johnson.

“They came out in a different package than we were expecting," Jefferson said. "They played coverage when we thought they were going to play man and they just did a great job covering. I tried to just throw it up to one of my guys and let them make a play.”

Corral and Jefferson combined to lead six touchdown drives in the fourth quarter. The teams combined for 442 yards of offense in the final quarter.

Playing about 30 minutes away from his hometown of Sardis, Miss., Jefferson accounted for 411 yards of offense and six touchdowns in his first collegiate start in his home state. He completed 25 of 35 passes for 326 yards, and rushed for 85 yards on 20 carries.

"I was proud of KJ Jefferson," Pittman said. "The offense kept answering the call."

Ole Miss (4-1, 1-1) led 21-14 at halftime, and extended its lead to 24-14 on Caden Costa’s 50-yard field goal early in the third quarter.

But Arkansas responded with 10 straight points to tie the game. Jefferson threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Trey Knox and Cam Little connected on a 31-yard field goal after the Rebels failed on a fourth-down conversion from their own 34.

Defense was optional from there. Snoop Conner ran for a 51-yard touchdown to put the Rebels ahead 31-24 three plays after Little’s field goal.

The Razorbacks answered when Jefferson ran for a 6-yard touchdown to cap a 4-play, 75-yard drive that tied the game 31-31 near the end of the third quarter.

Conner ran for touchdowns of 34 yards and 1 yard in the fourth quarter, part of a 110-yard, 3 touchdown game. Henry Parrish rushed for 111 yards.

"The bottom line is we had a lot of mistakes defensively and we just couldn’t tackle," Pittman said.

Burks caught a 20-yard touchdown pass with 11:12 remaining. Burks had 136 yards on seven receptions.

Arkansas punted on its first drive of the game, but scored on two consecutive possessions to go ahead 14-6 in the second quarter.

Jefferson capped a 15-play, 82-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown that put the Razorbacks ahead 7-0 late in the first quarter.

Corral led a 17-play, 75-yard touchdown drive on the ensuing possession that included three fourth-down conversions. Corral scored on a 5-yard touchdown run, but Costa missed the extra point, which left Ole Miss behind 7-6.

Trelon Smith rushed for a 14-yard touchdown to put the Razorbacks ahead 14-6 with 10:32 to play before halftime. Ole Miss tied the game two plays later when Corral threw 67 yards to Dontario Drummond, and ran in the two-point conversion on a quarterback keeper.

Arkansas was driving when Raheim "Rocket" Sanders fumbled at the Ole Miss 27 midway through the second quarter. Little missed a 50-yard field goal on the Razorbacks' next drive.

Ole Miss took a 21-14 lead 42 seconds before halftime on a 7-yard touchdown run by Corral.
