Couch Scores First Try in Loss to Army - Wheeling University Athletics

West Point, NY. – After falling in a tough contest last week, the Wheeling University Rugby team (3-2) went on the road Saturday to face Army. They battled hard throughout the afternoon but fell to the Black Knights 31-14 for their second loss of the season.

Wheeling would score on two tries during the day, but their defense couldn't hold up a strong Army team. The first try came courtesy of freshman Navin Couch, who scored the first try of his collegiate career. The other try came from sophomore Michael Muleya, who scored his first try of the 2021 Fall season. However, Army was able to score on four different tries throughout the day, and never relinquished the lead throughout the match.

As far as conversion kicks go, sophomore Joseph Iye successfully sent through both conversion kicks in the game. Iye has been a reliable conversion kicker all season, and once again came through in this one. Even though Wheeling has suffered two losses in a row, they are getting the chance to see some tough D1 competition that is preparing them for the rest of their schedule. Over the next two weeks, Wheeling will see Kent State University and Davenport, two D1 programs, as they continue to work and improve their play.

Head Coach Michael Geibel continues to see growth from his young team. The tougher competition is helping them grow as a team and is allowing them to see the level of competition that they will be facing as the season goes on.

The Wheeling University Rugby team is back home next Saturday when they host Kent State University at Bishop Schmitt Field.
