Dennis Davis, the hiker who claimed to see Brian Laundrie over the weekend, described him as having "a black beard and black mustache" which was "very short cut, very thick."
Laundrie has been missing since being named as a person of interest in the homicide of his fiancée Gabby Petito, 22. On Monday, the Haywood County Sheriff's Office in North Carolina released a 911 call from Davis, who claimed to have spoken with Laundrie, 23, along the border of Tennessee and North Carolina on the Appalachian Trail at around 12.30 am on Saturday. In the call, Davis said the man asked him how to get to California and was "talking wild."
In an interview with NewsNational Now published on Monday, Davis, who is an engineer by trade, said he was "100 percent confident" that the man was Laundrie.
After he spoke with him briefly, Davis said: "I drove about 15 minutes down the road because the guy was just acting weird. I didn't want to be in that area any longer and when I opened up that first picture, I saw was a portrait view [of Laundrie] and the thing that stood out was that black mustache and beard and it's really tight, really thick. And when I saw that first portrait view of him I knew, absolutely, it was him.
"After I called the FBI, I was looking again and I saw a profile view of him and of course as he was sitting in his truck, so most of the time, I saw the profile view of him. My heart was beating in my chest because that was the guy I was talking to for 15 minutes. I'm so confident it's not funny, I'm just 100% confident it was him."
Asked whether Laundrie had facial hair, Davis said: "He had a black beard and black mustache, very short cut, very thick. He had something tied around his head so I couldn't see at that time if he had any hair or not, I know from the pictures he's physically bald."
Davis said in the interview that he would be meeting with the FBI this week, likely on Wednesday, to discuss his sighting of the man he thinks is Laundrie. Newsweek has contacted the FBI for comment.
The journalist who interviewed him noted that Davis's profession required him to be good at seeing detail, which may make his comments about seeing Laundrie more likely to be credible.
As well as being the person of interest in Petito's murder, Laundrie also has an active warrant out for his arrest on fraud charges for allegedly using someone's bank card and PIN around the time his fiancée disappeared.
Petito was last seen alive in Grand Teto, Wyoming, on a cross-country road trip with Laundrie on August 25. She was found dead in Grand Teto National Park on September 19, and officials have ruled that her death was a homicide. However, the cause is still pending final autopsy results.
Laundrie returned to his parent's home in North Port, Florida on September 1 without Petito. His parents said they last saw him at their home on September 14 and that Laundrie told them he was going camping in the Carlton Nature Reserve in Florida but failed to return.
The case has attracted widespread media attention, and even celebrity bounty hunter Duane Chapman, who famously goes by Dog the Bounty Hunter, has joined the search in hopes he can find Laundrie before his 24th birthday in November. Chapman's daughter has also joined the search.
