Try something new: inshore shark fishing - The Inquirer and Mirror

By Cam Gammill

(Aug. 5, 2021) I’m a little nervous to write today’s article, because I hope it comes off the right way. I’ve been reluctant to include any news in my fishing reports about sharks, because I am truly afraid that by just mentioning the word, I’m going to scare people. I just hope you continue to read on and trust me.

Sharks are incredible creatures. They have stood the test of time and are incredibly adaptive, curious and intelligent. Sharks have zero interest in human beings. In fact, they are scared of us. I have people tell me all the time that they are afraid to go swimming because of sharks. I ask, are you afraid of dogs? And most people answer, of course not, we have a dog. There are more deaths caused by dogs each year than by sharks. Actually, there are more deaths caused by cows in a year.

The scariest part about swimming in our waters should be the rip currents, but no one ever mentions this for not going in the water. But I digress.

I bring this up because one of our amazing fisheries each year, which I don’t usually touch, is our inshore shark fishery. This was popularized by Elliot Sudal several years ago. Sudal is an incredible fisherman and brought a lot of attention to conservation and the sport of shark-fishing. The truth is, shark-fishing on Nantucket is amazing and productive.
