Aaron Young considers himself an all-purpose back that can do it all.
The Rutgers offense can take another step forward this fall if it can get more out of him.
“He’s a running back. That’s what he is. But he can go anywhere,” coach Greg Schiano said. “He can line up outside at wideout and be proficient at that, he’s a really good special teams. He’s a very valuable guy to our football team, and really a smart player. We’re going to lean on him quite a bit.”
Young fits offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson’s creative scheme well. At 5-foot-10 and 205 pounds, he’s sturdy but shifty; best suited to make things happen in space but also capable of running between the tackles. His status as a member of the backfield is without doubt, but he can step right in as a receiver without missing a stride. But it felt at times last season like the Scarlet Knights were just not maximizing his abilities.
Young had a consistent role in Rutgers’ offense — he had 58 touches in nine games, averaging close to seven per with no significant drop-off as the year progressed — but his production plummeted from his freshman season. Young averaged about a yard less per rush attempt and touch in 2020 than in 2019, and his receiving output was down by over three yards year-over-year.
Those numbers could be attributed in part to the Scarlet Knights’ improved receiving corps and the emergence of since-transferred running back Kay’Ron Adams and the emphasis on quarterback runs with Noah Vedral and Johnny Langan. But it seemed — like also happened with Isaih Pacheco at times — Young took a backseat with only so many snaps and touches to go around. Preventing similar droughts among key skill players is another step the offense has to take if it is to build off of last year’s historic production.
“We’re so much more comfortable now that we got to have spring ball and we learned the offense, all the little ins and outs. Year 2 is going to be great for us,” Young said. “I’ll fit in wherever the coaches need me. I do my part, I do my role and whatever they ask me to do, I’m going to do it.”
