FLINT, MI — A Vietnamese eatery in downtown Flint is in the process of expanding its menu to offer more vegan and vegetarian options and it’s latest creation: Wu-Tang wings.
MaMang, located inside the Flint Farmer’s Market at 300 East 1st Street in Flint, offers Vietnamese cuisine such as spring rolls, banh mi with Chinese-style BBQ pork and pho and Wu-Tang wings.
MaMang owner Tony Vu said the gluten-free chicken wings are tossed with an in-house chili oil.
Vu, a Flint native, jokingly said he’s waiting to be sued by the members of the hip-hop group, Wu-Tang Clan, which would prompt him to rename the wings after his last name.
The business celebrated its sixth anniversary this week on Thursday, July 15. As both a celebratory and business move, the eatery is moving into a new stall within the market that will offer more space with a kitchen.
The new space will be the kickstart to begin offering a more diverse menu Vu always always hoped for with vegetarian and vegan friendly foods and dive deeper into the Vietnamese culture, he said.
Vu, 39, grew up eating his mother’s traditional Vietnamese cooking, and chose to honor her with his business.
“It’s an homage to my mom and all her recipes that I grew up eating from her that she cooked for me as child,” Vu said.
He also shared his experience being familiar with the food industry from his parents operating the Golden Sea Horse restaurant for around a decade on Dort Highway in Flint.
The business owner said he chose to share the food with the community through MaMang because he saw a large void in the diversity of food options, particularly in the downtown Flint area.
“The Farmers’ Market, you don’t really get much diversity in food, and there was a window for that and it’s been a really amazing response from the community,” Vu said.
Items on the menu range from $3 to $13. To see a full menu, visit here.
