Sumpter Township – A man wanted in connection with a quadruple homicide in rural Wayne County had a previous domestic violence charge, records show.

Officers found two men and two women dead from apparent gunshot wounds on Saturday morning at the residence in the 24000 block of Martinsville Road, a gravel country byway in Sumpter Township, and Raymond Lee Bailey, 37, of Sumpter Township was identified as a suspect.

Police across Michigan are searching for Bailey and believe he might have headed toward the Upper Peninsula. Bailey’s vehicle was found abandoned near Bay City after authorities began tracking him, police said.

Police said he claimed responsibility for the killings in messages to friends.

Some people living near the shooting scene told reporters they heard a half dozen or more gunshots late Saturday morning and thought at first they were coming from the wooded areas surrounding their homes.

The domestic violence charge was brought in October 2019. Bailey was also charged with one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder for an alleged incident involving Laura Tanner, according to 34th District Court documents.

The assault charge was dismissed by the court, according to the documents, and Bailey was assigned a $1,000, 10% deposit bond. Bailey was also ordered to not have any direct or indirect contact with Tanner. The order expired on May 1.
