How fast is the number of Florida COVID-19 cases growing?

What’s the picture statewide?

Florida’s positivity rate is about 17 percent, according to Johns Hopkins University. That’s more than three times the World Health Organizations recommendation rate of 5 percent or lower, and topped only by Nevada, Idaho, Mississippi, Puerto Rico and Washington. More than 4.2 million tests have been recorded in Florida.

As hospitalizations have trended downward, deaths have been more sporadic, according to data compiled by The Atlantic’s COVID Tracking Project. In the past week, some days saw more than 200 new deaths, while others had less than 100.

There have been 9,587 total deaths statewide since the pandemic’s start in March.

Is Florida’s coronavirus outbreak still growing?

What’s the picture in Tampa Bay?

The Tampa Bay region counted 531 new infections and 27 deaths Sunday. Most of both were in Hillsborough, with 198 and 23, respectively. The other four deaths were in Pinellas.

Polk recorded 117 cases, Pinellas had 70, Pasco had 47, Manatee had 46, Citrus had 28 and Hernando had 25.

The deaths in Hillsborough were men and women 50 to 91. The deaths in Pinellas were two men, 63 and 67, and two women, both 64.

Hillsborough had the most new hospitalizations with 19. Pinellas had 15, Hernando had 10, Pasco and Polk had four each, and Citrus and Manatee had two each.

Altogether, Hillsborough had 34,238 cases and 488 deaths; Pinellas had 18,730 cases and 550 deaths; Polk had 15,429 cases and 360 deaths; Manatee had 9,781 cases and 247 deaths; Pasco had 7,453 cases and 150 deaths; Hernando had 2,225 cases and 61 deaths; and Citrus had 1,778 cases and 40 deaths.

What’s happening with hospitals?

About 5,700 people were in Florida hospitals with coronavirus as of Sunday morning, according to the Agency for Health Care Administration. About 885 were in the Tampa Bay region.

Fewer and fewer people have been hospitalized with the virus over the last month, easing the strain on hospitals. On Sunday, about 16,000 of the state’s 60,000 hospital beds were available, and about 1,300 of the state’s 6,200 ICU beds were open.

Across counties in Tampa Bay — Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk — about a quarter of regular beds and 20 percent of ICU beds were available.

Florida coronavirus cases by age group

Doctors say older people are at a greater risk to developing severe symptoms from COVID-19, which makes Florida especially vulnerable.
