Singer August Alsina has been out of the music spotlight for years. In an interview this week, the New Orleans musician said that during his music hiatus he was in a devoted love affair with actress Jada Pinkett Smith, with the blessing of her husband Will Smith.
Alsina, 27, revealed the alleged affair with the 48-year-old actress and producer during an interview with Angela Yee of “The Breakfast Club.” Jada Pinkett Smith has reportedly denied the affair. On Thursday, she tweeted what appeared to be a response to the controversial statements.
In the hourlong conversation, the “No Love” vocalist spoke primarily about his new studio album “The Product III: stateofEMERGEncy” and his five-part docuseries on his life. About 16 minutes into the conversation, Alsina began to talk about how his close relationship with the Smiths brought him scrutiny and damaged his career.

“People can have whatever ideas that they like. But what I’m not OK with is my character being in question ...” he said at about the 16:30 mark. “Contrary to what some people may believe, I’m not a troublemaker. I don’t like drama. Drama actually makes me nauseous. I also don’t think that it’s ever important for people to know what I do, who I sleep with, who I date, right? But in this instance, there are so many people who are side-eyeing me ... I’ve lost money, friendships, relationships behind it. And I think it’s because people don’t necessarily know the truth. But I’ve never done anything wrong. I love those people (the Smiths) ... They are beautiful people.”
The singer, who has battled an autoimmune disease since 2017, has been photographed with Pinkett Smith and seen in photos on family trips with the Smiths. Though speculation had surrounded the nature of the relation, neither party had previously confirmed a romantic relationship.
In the interview with Yee, Alsina shared that Pinkett Smith’s superstar husband was well aware of their connection.
"I actually sat down with Will and had a conversation ... He gave me his blessing," he said. "And I totally gave myself to that relationship for years of my life, and I truly and really, really, deeply loved and have a ton of love for her,” the singer explained.
Pinkett Smith has reportedly denied the affair via her reps, according to PageSix. According to the reps, the actress and host of “Red Table Talk” said Alsina’s statements about their relationship are “absolutely not true.”
The “Girls Trip” actress and the R&B crooner previously were linked after Alsina released a song called “Nunya” in 2019, which mentions his love for an “actress.” In the music video, a text message is shown with a love interest with the name “Koren,” which is Pinkett Smith’s middle name. At the time Alsina denied the song was about the actress.
Here’s an excerpt from the lyrics:
“But you said to me you wasn’t ready to be what I needed
So I gave you time to make me a priority
Put my feelings out there
You ignored it
Being real is what you can’t afford
And I paid a lot for it
The time I invested, you can’t give it back
You can’t get mad at the way I react
You got me feeling like it was an act
You’re just an actress”
In 2018, Smith spoke about him and his wife considering each other “life partners” and that there are no “deal-breakers” in their relationship when he was interviewed by tidal’s Rap Radar podcast. He added that the couple, who married in 1997, do not consider themselves married anymore.
“We don’t even say we’re married anymore. We refer to ourselves as ‘life partners,’ where you get into that space where you realize you are literally with somebody for the rest of your life,” Smith said. “There’s no deal-breakers. There’s nothing she could do − ever − nothing that would break our relationship. She has my support till death, and it feels so good to get to that space where you’re not complaining, and worrying, and demanding that a person be a certain thing.”
